Giuliani: Trump legal team reached out to Mueller after BuzzFeed report

Cohen, unlike in the Southern of District of NY case against him, did not say that Trump "directed" him to commit a crime. "The Americans and the USA president himself know this better", Peskov told reporters, asked whether the Kremlin had contacts with Trump's team about the Trump Tower project in Moscow.

"We commend them for standing up for the truth", Giuliani said, referring to Mueller's team.

Yes, Jeff. That's exactly it.

Even in the topsy-turvy Trump era, there have been two reliable constants: the anti-Trump media have refrained from publicly turning on each other, and no one expects any comment from Robert Mueller, the trappist special counsel who is investigating the president and Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Carr, people familiar with the matter said, hoped Leopold would notice that Cohen had not said during the hearing that Trump had explicitly directed him to lie.

These were lies; In fact, in October 2015, while the primary campaign was heating up, he signed a letter of intent for the Moscow deal Michael Cohen was pursuing on his behalf with Russian officials, setting out some preliminary terms for the project (there'd be an Ivanka Trump-branded spa!), and Cohen continued to keep him apprised of the deal's progress as he pursued it.

Renato Mariotti, a former federal prosecutor, told the Daily News that it wouldn't necessarily be a problem if Trump and Cohen's lawyers had contact ahead of the testimony, as Giuliani now claims. "But the president's recollection of them is that the thing had petered out quite a bit".

With this statement by Giuliani (which, who knows, he might contradict by day's end), we now have four different versions that the president and his representatives have told about his pursuit of a Moscow deal during the campaign.

Giuliani went a step further with The New York Times, where he quoted Trump saying the Trump Tower Moscow discussions were "going on from the day I announced to the day I won".

Cohen pleaded guilty November 29 in the special counsel's investigation to lying to Congress about the Trump Tower negotiations.

It remains unclear when or if discussions about building Trump Tower Moscow officially ended.

Cohen is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on February 7. It is also not known when BuzzFeed believes Cohen told the special counsel about Trump's instructions to lie. But he also didn't rule out that they might have discussed the testimony, asking "so what if he talked to him about it?"

The president has provided written answers to questions from Mueller on the Moscow project, according to Giuliani.
