Djokovic through to semi-finals as Nishikori retires

Djokovic through to semi-finals as Nishikori retires

"Novak knew that Nishikori has played three five-setters".

Kei Nishikori departs Rod Laver Arena. "Of course, I wasn't, like, fresh, fresh".

The Australian Open has yet to comment.

"I was really wanting to win this match because it was his birthday, and I think he would have been watching", the U.S. Open champion explained in a later news conference.

Osaka is on a 12-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments and will next play seventh-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals.

It was an ominous start, though, for the Frenchmen who was broken immediately and then went down 5-2 in the first. I was moving a lot, wasted too much energy.

Next, Djokovic will be up against Lucas Pouille of France, who defeated Milos Raonic of Canada in their quarter-final clash, to get a ticket to the final round of the Australian Open.

Speaking to Channel 9 commentator Jim Courier on court after the win, Djokovic attempted some of the local vernacular when asked to explain his spectacular success at the Australian Open. It was just a little bit of fatigue, a little bit of back, nothing major. "At a certain point, he gives in mentally", McEnroe said.

Chasing his seventh Australian Open, Novak Djokovic can nearly call this place home.

With the score reading 6-1 4-1, Nishikori offered his apologies to both the Serb and the capacity crowd as he retired. "We've played so many matches throughout our careers, especially here a couple of times years ago".

The Serb won previous year in the quarter-final at Wimbledon 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 and the US Open semi-final 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 on his way to lifting the titles.

Pouille is following in Andy Murray's footsteps as a top male player to hire a a female coach - in this case the same one - and, replying to John McEnroe's assertion in the on-court interview that more men should look to women as coaches, the 24-year-old said: "They should".

The Frenchman turned to Mauresmo late past year.

Osaka beat Williams for the championship in NY last September in a match filled with all sorts of drama involving the American star and the chair umpire.

This was the 15th straight win for Novak over Kei since that bad semi-final loss at the US Open in 2014 and he has become only the fourth player with seven Australian Open semi-final appearances after Roger Federer, Stefan Edberg and Ivan Lendl.
