'Bye bye': Donald Trump walks out of border wall meeting

United States President Donald Trump summoned the nation's attention to the Oval Office on Tuesday (Jan 8) for a prime-time pronouncement on the border wall stand-off at the centre of the government shutdown.

Hoping to demonstrate flexibility during his almost 10-minute speech from the White House Oval Office, Trump said of the border barrier he wants built: "At the request of the Democrats it will be a steel barrier and not a concrete wall".

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer gave themselves the job of providing on-air pushback to Mr. Trump.

Alan Jacobs says when it comes to Donald Trump people for and against his Presidency probably already had their minds up before he made his address. He said Schumer and Pelosi's support for border security but not a wall was "juvenile. very disingenuous".

"From all those drugs come all these other problems", she said, adding, "We've got to get a handle on it".

"Again, we saw a temper tantrum because he couldn't get his way". We are out of space to hold them and we have no way to promptly return them back home to their country.

However, it was also significant that he did not announce a national emergency, on the theory he could then use military construction money to build the wall, circumventing the Congress.

Make no mistake: Democrats and the President both want stronger border security.

It is the second longest government shutdown in US history, furloughing 800,000 government workers or forcing them to work without pay.

Three Republican senators are now publicly calling for the government shutdown to end even if there is no border wall deal, while half a dozen more have voiced concerns about the stand-off.

The shutdown is the third under Trump's watch and the longest since 1995.

Smith noted the White House is refusing to agree to those bills because of the alleged "crisis" at the southern border, which he noted is "arguably of their own making". "I think most Americans understand that it's purely political".

"Day after day, precious lives are cut short by those who have violated our borders", Mr Trump said.

"Never in our 30-year history have we been this one-sided (9 to 1) on a wager", he said. "My network will be carrying Trump's Wall speech live". He suggested the issue could be resolved in a quick meeting, but past discussions at the White House have not ended the stalemate.

Pelosi and Schumer also emphasized an obvious fact: On the first day that the 116th Congress was in session, House Democrats, who now hold the majority, passed government spending legislation that was almost identical to what Senate Republicans passed at the tail-end of the 115th Congress.

The president used a series of murders to highlight why "illegal aliens" need to be kept out, from a police officer killed on Boxing Day to a veteran who was raped and murdered in California.
