Trump 'tantrum' threatens USA government shutdown

The president says he doesn't mind taking the blame for a government shutdown if the two sides can't agree on funding for border improvements.

Congressional leaders on Wednesday were digging in for a fight over government funding, a day after a combative White House meeting with President Donald Trump that seemed to raise the likelihood of a partial government shutdown.

Trump had clashed with Schumer and Pelosi over border wall funding amid a looming government shutdown. "We want to come to an agreement". Instead, Trump said he'd take responsibility for any shuttering of government.

Pelosi, who is seeking to become House speaker when the new Congress convenes in January, said she and many other Democrats consider the wall "immoral, ineffective and expensive".

Department of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen said on Jun 12 at a security forum that her agency identifies and stops terrorists worldwide who would otherwise go undetected.

"Elections have consequences, Mr. President", said Schumer.

"When the president brags he has won North Dakota and IN, he's IN real trouble", retorted Schumer with a smile. Trump is demanding that Congress allocate $5 billion for construction of his proposed wall on the U.S. -Mexico border.

Pelosi and Schumer have urged Trump to support a bill that includes a half-dozen government funding bills largely agreed upon by lawmakers, along with a separate measure that funds the Department of Homeland Security at current levels through September 30.

So far, the president has not asked the Defense Department to build sections of the wall, but the military is allowed to build border barriers under certain circumstances, Army Lt. Col. Jamie Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Tuesday.

Schumer told Trump that "we have solutions that will pass the House and the Senate", but Trump was resisting "because you can't have your way" on the wall.

President Trump: "And then we have the easy one, the wall".

That gave Democrats some momentum heading into the talks, which also could veer into bipartisan bills on criminal justice reform and reauthorising farm programmes. A Mexican official familiar with the issue told CNN on Tuesday, "Mexico´s position regarding the so-called wall is the same the previous government had".

It was a new reality that Trump, still smarting from his party's losses on November 6, appeared to be struggling to internalize as his demands for border wall funds fell flat with those he'll need as partners to deliver on his priorities.

Trump wants at least $5 billion for the wall in the next funding package. "He said, 'Donald Trump.' I said, 'I never mentioned your name'".

They have urged Trump to support a bill that includes a half-dozen government funding bills largely agreed upon by lawmakers, along with a separate measure that funds the Department of Homeland Security at current levels through September 30. "This wall thing", she said, according to the aide.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says he is hoping for a "smooth ending" to the dispute over government funding that avoids a partial shutdown. "I think Congress should do what the American people want". "If we have to close down the country over border security I actually like that".

Trump is responding by saying he's "proud to shut down the government" and says he will "take the mantle".

Third, though the media hate this president because he insults them, he once again proved he is the most transparent and media-friendly American president in living memory.

Senate Appropriations Chairman Richard Shelby, R-Ala., said Monday he does not believe Trump or Democrats want to shut the government down.
