Trump Is Losing the Shutdown Fight in a Rout

President Trump on Friday threatened to close the southern border if Democrats do not relent in the standoff over border security funding, which has resulted in a partial government shutdown that so far has lasted a week.

After sitting for just a few minutes following a break for Christmas, the almost empty Senate adjourned until 10:00 am (1500 GMT) on Monday and was to continue budget deliberations only next Wednesday, which will be the 12th day of the shutdown.

Trump is not budging, having panned Democratic offers to keep money at current levels - $1.3 billion for border fencing, but not the wall.

The White House is accusing Democrats of walking away from the negotiating table.

Mulvaney said Trump is willing to shut down the border, despite the economic hit as $558 billion worth of goods flowed across the border a year ago, because "all options are on the table" and "it's the only way we can get the Democrats' attention". His opponents, including some in his Republican party, accuse the president of exaggerating the danger from illegal immigration for his own political gain.

He claimed he will be "forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with".

Drew Hammill, spokesman for House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi said Democrats will not fund Trump's "immoral, ineffective and expensive wall". Republicans have only 51 seats, so they will need to try to persuade some Democrats to back the measure. Negotiations continue between Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill, but there's only so much Congress can do without the president.

Trump appears to have been influenced by uber-conservative members of the media when he backtracked on his support for a government funding deal last week and propelled the federal government into shutdown mode just days before Christmas.

While blaming Pelosi for preventing a compromise, Mulvaney said it was his gut feeling that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer "was really interested in doing a deal and coming to some sort of compromise". A third option was a year-long bipartisan bill that would cover spending for all but the Department of Homeland Security, which handles border security and for which a separate agreement is needed. "I think that's exactly what has to happen", Roberts said.

The "Machete" star was caught by TMZ - the same day the USA government shut down over the controversial topic - at the Los Angeles Mission the Friday before Christmas when he was helping serve food to the homeless.
