Trudeau avoids confrontation with Saudi crown prince, Putin during G20 summit

The content of the gruesome tape - a key piece of evidence in the murder allegedly ordered by United States ally Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman - was distributed by Turkey after Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on 2 October.

The killing of Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and a critic of the crown prince, at Riyadh's consulate in Istanbul, has strained Saudi Arabia's ties with the West and battered Prince Mohammed's image overseas.

Mr. Faurie, whose ministry had earlier tried to shield the prince from a criminal complaint by invoking his "special immunity", said the encounter with Mr. Macri was motivated by the nations' close commercial ties.

French President Emmanuel Macron found Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman at the beginning of the G20 summit in Argentina and engaged in what appeared to be an intense conversation. That meeting was set to take place late Friday.

Saudi Arabia is set to expand its market share in China this year for the first time since 2012, with demand stirred up by new Chinese refiners pushing the kingdom back into contention with Russian Federation as top supplier to the world's largest oil buyer.

A senior White House official said the two exchanged pleasantries.

The killing of Khashoggi, a USA resident who wrote for the Washington Post, has emerged as the most serious threat to American-Saudi ties since at least the September 11, 2001 terror attacks. They confirmed and asserted their pride in the Crown Prince, who has overseen the Saudi Vision 2030 and led them in the march toward economic diversification and progress.

Mohammad Bin Salman previously enjoyed warm greetings around the world for his reputation as a reformer in the kingdom, despite ongoing Saudi human rights abuses.

British PM Theresa May told the prince that the killers of Khashoggi should be held to account, her office said after the two leaders met.

Later in the one-minute clip Macron says: "You never listen to me" and the crown prince replies: "I will listen, of course".

The excerpts indicated that the Central Intelligence Agency had "medium-to-high" confidence that Prince Mohammed had personally targeted Khashoggi to the extent of "probably ordering his death", the Journal reported.

But he criticised Prince Mohammed, saying that during the summit the 33-year-old heir apparent gave an "unbelievable explanation" on Khashoggi's killing that denied any Saudi official role. I continue to work on this issue.
