Second child dies at Mexico-US border

Second child dies at Mexico-US border

Hours after a second Guatemalan child died in custody, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said it will perform medical checks on every child in detention under the age of 10.

It reported that he and his father were taken to a hospital in Alamogordo, New Mexico, where the boy was diagnosed with a cold and a fever, given prescriptions for amoxicillin and ibuprofen, and released on Monday afternoon.

On Monday evening, the boy began vomiting and was taken back to the hospital for evaluation.

A 7-year-old Guatemalan girl died of dehydration and septic shock while in government custody earlier this month.

CBP says it does not know the cause of the child's death.

He is the second migrant child to have died this month after being detained at the border between Mexico and the United States.

The boy's death came at a time when the U.S. is undergoing a partial government shutdown, which was triggered by Trump's demand for border wall funding. CBP is conducting a review and will release more details as they become available, it said. Her death - which brought down heavy criticism on USA immigration authorities - is also under investigation. Late at night, at around 10:00 p.m., CBP said Felipe again appeared nauseous and "lethargic".

On Sunday, because of overcrowding at the El Paso facility they were in, they were shipped to a facility in New Mexico and on Monday - six days after they were arrested - CBP contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for a more permanent placement.

Hours later, the pair were transported by bus to the nearest Border Patrol Station in Lordsburg-which is approximately 90 minutes away.

Radio traffic indicated that the agent had arrived at the medical center, where he was met by hospital staff. In a statement, the ministry said it also requested medical reports to clarify the cause of death.

"This is a tragic loss".

According to a later time line issued by the agency, the boy was apprehended on December 18 at about 1 p.m. with his father 3.29 miles west of the Paso Del Norte Port of Entry near El Paso for illegal entry.

Guatemalan officials said Tuesday that the father says the boy was healthy when they arrived and were arrested as part of a group of migrants just west of El Paso, Texas, in the early afternoon of December 18.

Immigration advocates and human rights groups sharply criticized CBP in the wake of Felipe's death.

Guatemala's Consul General in Phoenix, Oscar Padilla Lam, met with the boy's father in Almagordo to "hear his version of the facts", according to the statement.

The Foreign Ministry said it will provide all assistance and consular protection to the boy's father and assume responsibility for the repatriation of the boy's remains.

Agency guidelines say immigrants generally shouldn't be detained for more than 72 hours in CBP holding facilities, which are usually smaller and have fewer services than ICE detention centres.

A United Nations human rights expert on Monday called on American authorities to stop detaining children and called on Washington to conduct a thorough, independent probe into Jakelin's death. She was ultimately flown to an El Paso hospital, where she died the next day. "Instead of immediately acting to keep children and all of us safe along our border, this administration forced a government shutdown over a wall".
