Russian Federation used all major social media platforms to aid Trump

Russian Federation used all major social media platforms to aid Trump

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said Monday that it was "gratifying" to read two Senate Intelligence Committee reports on the scope of Russian misinformation campaigns, because they reiterated the intelligence community's 2017 findings.

Trump's tirade follows a detailed US Senate report on Russian troll farms that disrupted the 2016 US presidential election via social media.

America is at an "asymmetric disadvantage" against the attacks because of its scruples about closing down social media accounts, one report by New Knowledge, a cybersecurity company in Texas, said.

The Russian operation had broad reach: between 2015 and 2017, over 30 million users in the United States shared the IRA's Facebook and Instagram posts with their social contacts, the Oxford and Graphika report found.

It says the IRA's activities targeting the US began on Twitter in 2013 but quickly expanded to a broader effort that included activities on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, among others.

For example, the IRA-created account "Blacktivist" sent out messages on the Democratic candidate such as: "No lives matter to Hillary Clinton".

The broader Russian propaganda operation, which continues to this day, has also leaned more heavily on Instagram to sow discord that was previously understood, according to a second report prepared for the committee by private researchers from New Knowledge, Columbia University, and Canfield Research LLC.

What Russia Learned About Black Voters From America

"This newly released data demonstrates how aggressively Russian Federation sought to divide Americans by race, religion and ideology, and how the IRA actively worked to erode trust in our democratic institutions", Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., said in a statement.

Troll accounts marshalled by the organisation had inflamed right-wing conspiracy theories and suppressed the vote of traditionally liberal-leaning groups such as African Americans, the report said. The IRA has been charged by us officials for interfering in the 2016 election.

As CBS News' Olivia Gazis reported, two new independent analyses revealed this week show the Russian government's efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election were sprawling, multifaceted and sophisticated, affecting millions of users in the USA and persisting long after the election was over.

Establishment figures of either party, especially Clinton, were universally panned.

The IRA, though, also targeted that community for voter suppression messages.

During the week of the presidential election, posts on right-leaning sites connected to the IRA aimed to generate anger and suspicion and hinted at voter fraud, while posts on sites targeted to African-Americans largely ignored mentions of the election until the last minute.
