Putin says USA presence in Japan complicates signing of peace treaty

Putin says USA presence in Japan complicates signing of peace treaty

The fate of another non-proliferation treaty is under question, the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which expires in 2021 and no negotiations have yet been conducted on its extension, he said.

Putin said holding another referendum was risky.

"An exit from the INF Treaty could potentially lead to the [U.S.] deployment of medium-range and short-range missiles in European countries like during the Cold War", Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with the state-run Channel One broadcaster following Putin's press conference.

Now the United States has announced the withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with possible deployment of such missiles in Europe, to which Russian Federation will have to respond, Putin said.

President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the United States' military presence in Japan was complicating the search for a formal peace treaty between Moscow and Tokyo.

"We are witnessing the breakup of the arms control system", Putin said, noting the United States plan to opt out of the INF Treaty and its reluctance to negotiate the extension of the New START agreement.

Others like British conservative and defense minister Tobias Ellwood disagree that USA forces should leave Syria, where terrorism and civil war have endured for years. "ISIS hits us they are doomed!"

Putin, who said Russia's own relations with Britain were deadlocked but that Moscow was interested in improving them, characterised Brexit as an example where Western democracy was starting to show cracks. We know how to do it.

"We've beaten them and we've beaten them badly".

Putin also emphasised that the USA is pondering the use of ballistic missiles with conventional warheads, saying that the launch of such a missile could be mistaken for the launch of a nuclear-tipped one and trigger a global catastrophe. At the same time the West has harshly criticized Russian Federation for its military and political support for Syrian President Bashar Assad, which USA officials say has prolonged the war in Syria and the suffering of its people. I am building by far the most powerful military in the world. Although he faces no serious political threat for now, plans to sharply raise the pension age saw his approval rating fall to below 60 percent for the first time in five years.
