Partial US Government Shutdown Set To Last Through Christmas

Partial US Government Shutdown Set To Last Through Christmas

House Republicans passed a spending bill that included an additional $5 billion for the wall last week, but the legislation is considered dead on arrival in the Senate where Democrats have said they would not support it.

Trump last week insisted that the government would shut down if Democrats did not include funding for a wall on the border with Mexico.

Republican and Democratic senators alike expressed grave concern about Mattis's departure, which was spurred by Trump's decision to pull US troops from Syria, despite the objections of military leaders and his own defense secretary.

But what appeared to spook Wall Street most was Trump's continuing tirade against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, whom the president reportedly considered ousting over fed policy raising interest rates. The House and Senate Appropriations Committees each divide into 12 subcommittees that deal with different parts of the budget.

Mr Trump himself took to Twitter on Sunday to defend his plans for the border with Mexico.

The senator had said he would "remind" the vice-president that Democrats would not sign off on funding for a border wall. Democrats say no way and have offered $1.3 billion for what they call border security.

"I am all alone (poor me) in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come back and make a deal on desperately needed Border Security", he tweeted Monday.

Mulvaney, who is also director of the White House budget office, said he's awaiting word from Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY after the administration on Saturday presented Schumer with a counteroffer in the long-running dispute over funding the wall.

Employees at those agencies deemed essential will continue working without pay, including many Transportation Security Administration workers dealing with the influx of holiday travellers.

Schumer said the "Trump shutdown" could end immediately if the president abandons the wall.

But on Friday, he said he hoped the shutdown would not last long.

The White House, meanwhile, said Trump was meeting Monday afternoon with DHS Secretary Kristjen Nielsen and other department officials "to discuss border security".

Trump was staying in Washington for Christmas because of the shutdown, the White House said.

Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., said the administration is sitting on most of the money Congress gave Trump past year for border security, excluding a wall.

No one really knows, and no one really seems in a rush to get it sorted out.

"One would think that securing our homeland, controlling our borders and protecting the American people, would be bipartisan priorities...a core duty of any nation's government", Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said of Kentucky has said.

America woke to day two of its third government shutdown in a year with hundreds of thousands of federal employees no closer to being paid over Christmas, national parks closed and Donald Trump obdurately refusing to accept the blame for an event he previously declared he would be "proud" to cause. "It´s a spectacle and, candidly, it´s juvenile", said Corker, speaking in his final days before stepping down from Congress.

The US Senate and the House of Representatives will be in session on Saturday as congressional leaders try to hammer out a spending agreement to end the stalemate.

On issues overseas, Trump acted against the advice of his national security advisers and issued a surprise decision to pull troops from Syria.
