Japan’s Shinzo Abe to UK’s Theresa May: avoid no-deal Brexit

Japan’s Shinzo Abe to UK’s Theresa May: avoid no-deal Brexit

Channel 4 is plotting a rival Brexit TV debate featuring Tony Blair and Boris Johnson as negotiations over the showdown between Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn descend into acrimony.

She said: "I am asking every MP to think about delivering on the Brexit vote, doing it in a way that's in the national interest, doing it in a way that's in the interests of their constituents because it protects the jobs and livelihoods of their constituents".

"I believe as a country we could really prosper outside the European Union, I believe there will be opportunities for us outside the EU that there aren't as a member of the EU, but a divided country is not a country that prospers", she said.

With scores of backbench Conservatives threatening to rebel in the historic "meaningful vote", Mrs May might have to rely on Labour votes and abstentions to save her Brexit deal. Shadow chancellor John McDonnell said he did not now expect any Labour MPs to vote for Mrs May's deal, telling Talk Radio he thinks the party will "hold together".

Meanwhile, speaking to reporters on her flight to the G20 summit, Mrs May said a defeat in the Commons in a fortnight would mean "there will be decisions to be taken by Government and by business in relation to the practical preparations they would be looking to make for no-deal".

The BBC's debate would take part on Sunday 9 December, two days before MPs are due to vote the government's Brexit deal.

"Instead, what I see from Labour is an attempt to frustrate what the Government is doing to deliver Brexit for the British people". "We don't see any alternative coming forward from the Labor Party".

May's comments came after lawmakers proposed an amendment that could stop Brexit if Parliament rejects her agreement.

With scores of Tory MPs now publicly opposed to the deal, his departure highlighted the scale of the task the Prime Minister faces if she is to win the crunch vote in the Commons on December 11.

He tweeted to his 1.88million followers: "Theresa May said she wanted a head to head debate with me on her botched Brexit deal and I am ready to do that".

Brian Monteith, director of communications at Global Britain, accused the prime minister of "selling the country short", slamming her draft deal agreed with Brussels earlier this month.

To fully debate only the Prime Minister's view and that of the Leader of the Opposition - views which have been televised repeatedly in recent weeks, and which are simply different versions of Brexit, whilst positioning other options on the side of the debate - would be to prevent the public benefitting from a full understanding of the options and potential outcomes facing the United Kingdom as a whole and as a result would be a severe dereliction of your public duty.

Many members of Parliament oppose the deal because it leaves details of the future relationship between Britain and the European Union to be negotiated during a transition period that will last least 21 months. "But then we didn't win 100% of the vote ... you can't always get everything that you want", he wrote.
