G20 Summit 2018 in Argentina

G20 Summit 2018 in Argentina

The stage is set for a showdown in Buenos Aires tonight as Mr Trump dines with President Xi of China. "We are debating (trade and climate change) more closely because we want to reach the consensus of all the countries involved".

The key issue there will be the nations' trade tariffs dispute.

G20 powers open two days of summit talks on Friday after a stormy buildup dominated by tensions with Russian Federation and US President Donald Trump's combative stance on trade and climate fears.

The official quoted earlier said differences of opinion in discussions so far have been the sharpest in trade.

Prince Mohammed was greeted warmly by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The summit marks a quick return to the global stage for the Prince Mohammed after the kingdom came under fire for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in its Istanbul consulate.

A decade on, that unity has vanished as the "America First" Trump shreds the consensus underpinning global trade and other G20 countries such as Brazil, Italy and Mexico turn to populist leaders.

Following the USMCA signing, and once Argentina's President Mauricio Macri has opened the first of the summit's two days, a mass protest is planned in central Buenos Aires on Friday afternoon. If we could make a deal that would be good.

-China trade war. Since the summer, the USA has imposed $50 billion in additional tariffs on Chinese goods because the East Asian giant has "treated the US unfairly", according to the Trump administration.

So Mr Macron is fashioning himself at this summit as the anti-Trump choice - a champion of the Paris climate accord, defender of the postwar system of global trade and crusader against multinational tax evaders.

G20 is an global forum for the governments and central bank governors from 19 countries of the world's largest economies and the European Union Commission.

Also looming large amid dozens of bilateral meetings in Buenos Aires: the gruesome slaying of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate and how the Saudi crown prince, who is alleged to have ordered the killing, is received by world leaders.

Trump barrelled into the two-day meeting by announcing via Twitter that he was cancelling on Putin over Russia's seizure of Ukrainian vessels.

Morrison said Australia and the United States "have always been the greatest of friends".

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on Trump to remove tariffs on steel and aluminum, saying they remain a major economic obstacle.

Current and former White House officials told the AP that Trump had at time expressed his frustration about overseas travel, and they have cut short his trips to please him.

The agreements include a China-financed nuclear programme that will build a fourth nuclear power plant in Argentina that reportedly could cost about US$8 billion, and a currency swap that will double Argentina's credit line to US$18.7 billion, making China the biggest non-institutional lender of the country, the official said.

British Prime Minister Theresa May is fighting for political survival as she tries to pull her country out of the European Union.
