Donald Trump stops at Ramstein base in Germany after Iraq visit

Donald Trump stops at Ramstein base in Germany after Iraq visit

US President Donald Trump's unannounced visit to Iraq has sparked a wave of condemnations from the Arab country's political and military leaders, with some of them demanding the expulsion of American forces.

US President Donald Trump's surprise visit to Iraq did not include a meeting with Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, and enraged local lawmakers, exposing rifts between Baghdad and Washington. According to NPR, Trump and Mahdi had planned to meet, but this fell apart after he asked the prime minister to leave the capital city of Baghdad and meet him in Al Asad - a request Iraqis found disrespectful to their sovereignty.

USA defence secretary James Mattis was ousted from office two months early shortly after Mr Trump announced his decision to withdraw troops, claiming ISIS had been beaten.

The president told reporters that he wants Iraq to still be used as a base to stage attacks against the Islamic State if needed - and added that the U.S. can attack ISIS "so fast and so hard" that they 'won't know what the hell happened'.

"I got you a big one", Trump told the United States troops at Al Asad Air Base on Wednesday, according to CNN.

"The United States can not continue to be the policeman of the world", Trump told reporters soon after he addressed American soldiers. We could make it 3%, we could make it 2%, we could make it 4%.' I said, 'No.

Approximately 5,000 US troops are stationed in Iraq as part of the coalition against the Islamic State group.

But as a number of United States commentators noted, armed forces personnel have in fact received a pay rise in each of the past 10 years.

Sabah al-Saadi, the leader of the Islah parliamentary bloc, also called for an emergency session of the parliament "to discuss this blatant violation of Iraq's sovereignty and to stop these aggressive actions by Trump who should know his limits: The US occupation of Iraq is over". And then he went on to apparently out some of them whose identities are supposed to be a closely guarded secret. His shock decision to remove 2,000 USA soldiers from Syria sparked anger with some Republicans, Democrats and across the globe when it was announced this month.

Wednesday also marked the fifth day of a government shutdown over a budget dispute between Trump and congressional Democrats.

Bina said Trump's visit "places many question marks on the nature of the USA military presence and its real objectives, and what these objectives could pose to the security of Iraq". In the Kurdish region there were hopes for a Trump visit, even as there is criticism of the U.S. walking away from Kurdish areas in Syria.

Trump said that after US troops in Syria return home, Iraq could still be used to stage attacks on IS militants.

Mr Trump told troops at the Iraq base: "We're no longer the suckers, folks". And we give frankly a lot more than that if you look at the books.

The president told Fox News' Chris Wallace at the time that he should have gone to Arlington, and he hasn't visited a combat zone because he has "had an unbelievably busy schedule", adding, "I will be doing it".

Trump's decision comes one week after pulling troops from Afghanistan and Syria.

Trump´s troop drawdowns - and the abrupt way that they were announced - helped trigger the resignation of his defence secretary, Jim Mattis, who has been one of the administration´s heavyweights.
