Comey Frustrates Republicans During Closed-Door Hearing

Republican lawmakers were frustrated with the proceedings, complaining that Comey didn't give satisfactory answers to their questions.

Comey was questioned as part of a Republican-led House inquiry into possible Russian interference in the USA election, and email use by Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in 2016.

The panels are investigating Clinton's use of a private email server while she was in office and about the handling of the probe into whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 USA election.

Comey was in charge of both of those investigations.

In October 2017, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC) announced a joint investigation into decisions made by the agencies in 2016.

After the questioning was underway, some Republicans signaled they were unhappy with Comey's level of cooperation.

"Don't do it in a dark corner and don't do it in a way where all you do is leak information", said Comey's attorney, David Kelley. "So it's hard for me to see how he was on Team Clinton secretly at that point in time", Comey said, referring to the October 28, 2016, letter which stated that the FBI had "learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation" into the private email server that Clinton used as secretary of state.

Democrats disagreed that Comey wasn't being cooperative.

"He answered the questions he had to answer", said Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of IL.

Democrats charged that summoning Comey was the GOP's final attempt to distract from special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe before they lose control of the House in January.

It was unclear if Comey is returning the week after next because Republicans felt he was being uncooperative, or if it was an issue with timing.

"Mr. Comey is the right witness, but here for the wrong questions", Krishnamoorthi said outside the hearing room, according to USA Today.

When asked what types of questions the fired FBI director was evading, Issa said: "In broad-brush strokes, everything related to Hillary's investigation, everything related to how they got on to it and what their process was, everything related to the FISA warrants and the fake dossier - broadly those are the areas in which, time and time and time again, he's not answering". "But I'm trying to respect the institution and to answer questions in a respectful way".

While it was uncertain if Comey spoke under oath Friday, lying to Congress is a crime under any circumstance.

Over the previous year, Republicans on the two separate House panels have brought in a series of officials and said after the closed-door meetings that there is ample evidence of bias.

Strzok defiantly fought with angry Republican lawmakers in a riveting hearing that featured Strzok reading aloud from his sometimes-lewd texts and Democrats openly yelling at their Republican counterparts.

While the Senate committees looking into similar affairs have proceeded with a fair degree of bipartisanship, the House inquiries have devolved into partisan bickering.

Trump said that the latest Rasmussen reports showed that his approval rating at 50 per cent.
