Actress And Director Penny Marshall Is Dead At 75

According to USA Today, Penny Marshall, a star on Laverne & Shirley and one of the most successful female film directors of all time passed away today at age 75 due to complications from diabetes.

In addition to the Happy Days spinoff show Laverne & Shirley, Marshall acted as a guest star in numerous TV shows such as '70s comedy series The Odd Couple. The following year in 2013 Marshall reunited onscreen with her Laverne & Shirley costar Cindy Williams in the Nickelodeon series Sam & Cat.

In a statement to ET Canada, a spokesperson for Dennis Rodman says: "Dennis is sad to hear of Penny's passing and will always think of the friendship and many great memories he had with her".

"What she had was an instinct for knowing what would please moviegoers, large crowds of people", Basinger said. I was very fortunate to spend time with her. I join the more than 1.4 million residents of this borough in not only mourning her passing, but remembering her legacy as an artist who made us laugh, cry and think. It was special. Madonna was perfectly placed as the naughty Mae, Rosie O'Donnell as her smack-talking bestie.

Filmmaker Kevin Smith wrote about her influence as well.

Marshall made the enormously charming and much loved The Preacher's Wife with Denzel Washington, Whitney Houston and Courtney B. Vance. "Love you. Hanx", he wrote. Her second directorial feature, Big, became a massive critical and commercial success, helping to launch Tom Hanks into superstardom and cementing Marshall as the first woman director in Hollywood history to direct a movie that grossed more than $100 million.

ET spoke to Marshall in November 2016, when she talked about her relationship with her brother Garry. She followed up with the medical drama "Awakenings" (1990) starring Robin Williams as a shy doctor and Robert De Niro as his patient who wakes up from a 30-year coma.

She also directed 'A League of Their Own'.

Geena Davis as Dottie in "A League of Their Own". She studied acting while supporting herself as a secretary - a role she would later play on "Happy Days". "Penny will be missed, but her talent and inspiration is evergreen".

- Rob Reiner, who was married to Marshall from 1971 to 1981, via Twitter. "Big" producer James L. Brooks praised her for making "films which celebrated humans" and for her helping hand to young comedians and writers.

"She used comedy to bring us depictions of women who were fiercely independent, sometimes flawed, yet totally lovable", the statement continued.
