White House Reportedly Backtracks, Will Not Seek Revocation of Jim Acosta’s Credential

White House Reportedly Backtracks, Will Not Seek Revocation of Jim Acosta’s Credential

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, in an interview Friday on Fox News' "Hannity", told her father, former Arkansas GOP Gov. Mike Huckabee, a letter had been sent to CNN, and it is "frankly laughable" the network claims its access has been hindered.

Later that same day, the White House sent Acosta a formal letter outlining a "preliminary decision" to suspend his pass.

"These actions threaten all journalists and news organisations".

On Friday, Trump said that "rules and regulations" were being drafted to govern news conferences, where the president or his representatives often accuse journalists - Acosta in particular - of being overly hostile.

After the President had had enough and tried to shut down Acosta's fierce line of questioning, a White House staffer attempted to take the microphone away from the CNN reporter, who refused to give it up. Trump responded by branding Acosta a "rude, awful person".

CNN has said that it has asked for a new emergency hearing to allow its reporter Jim Acosta to remain at the White House, saying officials are threatening to revoke his press pass again.

CNN sued on Tuesday, saying revoking Mr. Acosta's credentials was a violation of First Amendment press rights, Fifth Amendment due process rights and the Administration Procedure Act, which prohibits arbitrary decision-making. The judge also remarked on Acosta "laying hands" on a White House intern, calling the characterization "likely untrue" and "partly based on evidence of questionable accuracy". "I want to thank the judge for the decision he made today".

"These basic, commonsense practices are necessary for orderly press conferences that are fair to all journalists in attendance", they wrote, adding that "no other reporter" failed to live up to those standards at the November 7 press conference.

In the Friday ruling, the judge restored Acosta's credentials temporarily while a CNN lawsuit, backed by media organisations including the right-wing cable television channel Fox News, against the administration proceeds.

The White House responded that it would come up with a code of conduct for the press at briefings, which hadn't existed before.

Fresh off decrying lack of "decorum" among members of the press, Trump mocks a Democratic congressman's stature and misspells his name to call him a piece of excrement. "I mean, with this stuff you never know what's going to happen".
