Wayne Rooney 'embarrassed' by the end of his time at Manchester United

Wayne Rooney 'embarrassed' by the end of his time at Manchester United

Manchester United all-time leading goal score Wayne Rooney says he was "embarrassed" during his final days with the club.

Wayne Rooney made his 120th and final appearance for England as Gareth Southgate's team beat the United States 3-0 in a friendly at Wembley on Thursday. In some ways it's better it didn't go in. It's never happened before.

"I think there are periods throughout my career where you do lack a bit in confidence, where you doubt yourself at times. It was a great touch for me".

Rooney, wearing the number 10 shirt, was brought on for former Manchester United team-mate Jesse Lingard in the 58th minute and handed the captain's armband.

Jesse Lingard opened the scoring and Trent Alexander-Arnold followed a couple of minutes later with his first worldwide goal.

So the former Manchester United star bows out of the global game with 53 goals to his name.

"When I had my second injury, he [Knowles] was the guy I went to to get me back into the running phase". I would like to thank Gareth and the FA for giving me this opportunity, and the players.

"Tonight was a great way to finish off my global career".

Brighton defender Lewis Dunk and Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, a second-half substitute, were barely tested but both were solid on their first appearances, while Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho played the full game as he won his second cap.

"But, being honest I was actually disappointed I wasn't there with England for the first time".

Southgate made eight changes to the side that defeated Spain 3-2 in the Nations League last time out and, while praising the impact several new faces made, he feels there is still room for improvement.

"I'm proud to be the record goalscorer".

Rooney will now be willing the World Cup semi-finalists on to greater heights from the sidelines.

"It's my opinion that England are in very safe hands from what I've seen this week", Rooney was quoted as saying by AFP.

"We know not to underestimate Croatia, they have a huge lift tonight and the great thing is it sets up a brilliant game at the end of what has been a really exciting year". How the players are responding to it is brilliant. It's a great group of young players who have a bright future.

But it was the players at the start of their global careers who stole the show, as Southgate fielded England's most inexperienced starting XI in almost 40 years.

"I hope they do".
