United States agents shoot tear gas at migrants

United States agents shoot tear gas at migrants

U.S. President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday to express his displeasure with the caravans in Mexico.

The plan, to be known as "Remain in Mexico", would require asylum applicants at the border to stay in Mexico while their cases are processed, potentially ending a system Trump calls "catch and release" that has until now generally allowed those seeking refuge to wait on safer US soil, according to the Post.

Respect for the right of asylum for all members of the Central American Exodus. All will stay in Mexico.

More than 5,000 migrants have been camped in and around a sports complex in Tijuana after making their way through Mexico in recent weeks via caravan.

Trump used the caravans as an election issue in this month's midterms, sending USA military to the border and authorising troops to use lethal force.

Hours earlier, The Washington Post quoted her as saying that the incoming administration of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador had agreed to allow migrants to stay in Mexico as a "short-term solution" while the USA considered their applications for asylum.

Sanchez was quoted by the paper as saying that Mexico would allow asylum seekers to stay in the country as a "short-term solution". He tweeted, "our very strong policy is Catch and Detain". President Trump is claiming, without evidence, that "it is a way they get certain people out of their country and dump in U.S". Under such a plan, Central Americans seeking asylum would generally have to file for protection in Mexico, not in the United States. "The hope is that asylum seekers will not want to live in (Mexico) for months/years and won't come", Leutert said via Twitter. The caravans will not be permitted to enter the United States. The United States already has such an understanding with Canada. President Enrique Pena Nieto offered thousands of Central Americans asylum on October 26 if they agreed to remain in southern Mexico. Mexico can not be considered safe for asylum seekers, many argue. The new measures could also trigger fresh legal challenges.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement that "President Trump has developed a strong relationship with the incoming Obrador administration, and we look forward to working with them on a wide range of issues".

Lopez Obrador has vowed to try to eliminate the causes of migration by creating more jobs and improving living conditions in Mexico and Central America.

Border Patrol Agent Eduardo Olmos told City News Service that the woman told agents she was not part of the migrant caravan that arrived in Tijuana last week. The migrants say they are fleeing poverty and violence in their homelands.

A migrant woman was hurt during her attempt to climb a U.S. -Mexico border fence with her two small children.

Some Central American migrants, mostly men, tried to breach the border crossing between Tijuana, Mexico, and California on Sunday, after pushing past a blockade of Mexican police standing guard near the global border crossing in a bid to pressure the U.S to hear their asylum claims.
