UNICEF warns impeding aid delivery in Yemen will lead to starvation

UNICEF warns impeding aid delivery in Yemen will lead to starvation

According to the World Health Organization, almost 10,000 people have been killed in the conflict, though some rights groups estimate the toll could be five times higher.

Riyadh and Abu Dhabi say wresting control of Hodeidah would deliver a blow to the Houthis, who still control the most populated areas of Yemen including the capital Sanaa, by cutting their main supply line and force them to the negotiating table.

Dozens of Yemeni rebels have been killed in battles and air strikes in Hodeida, medics said on Sunday (Nov 4), as pro-government forces advanced in the insurgent-held Red Sea port city.

The port is the entry point for more than 70% of imports into the impoverished country.

Yemen has been at war since March 2015 when Houthis occupied northern Yemen, forcing the government into exile, resulting in a Saudi-led coalition being formed to support the government that has waged a destructive air campaign in the country.

On Thursday, Yemen's internationally recognised government said it was ready to re-start peace talks with the Houthis after recent efforts to meet ended in failure.

Earlier on Wednesday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement that Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Houthi rebels should pause fighting and begin negotiations on a possible peace deal.

The United Nations has listed Yemen as the country with the world's biggest humanitarian crisis, with 7 million Yemenis on the brink of starvation and cholera causing more than 2,000 deaths.

United Nations chief Antonio Guterres has stressed that it was "very important" for Houthi militias in Yemen to halt missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, as Western diplomats told Asharq Al-Awsat that the UK is planning to present a draft Security Council resolution on the crisis in Yemen.

"As an global community we have been shamefully slow to act to end the crisis in Yemen", she said in a statement during a trip to South Korea.

"Figures, in fact, don't say a lot but are important because they call us all to realize how bad the situation is disastrous", he said.

He is preparing to visit Taiz, Yemen's third largest city and a flashpoint since the Houthis drove the government out of Sanaa in 2014, according to sources close to the United Nations talks.

The coalition had massed thousands of troops near the city on Wednesday, in a move to pressure the Houthis to return to UN-sponsored peace talks.

Other rights groups estimate the toll could be five times higher.
