Search teams recover chairs, wheels from Indonesia jet crash site

Search teams recover chairs, wheels from Indonesia jet crash site

However, at 06:29 the ATC saw Lion Air JT 610 left 5,000 feet followed by the Bhavye communicating to the ATC upon a problem with the plane's flight control and asked for his plane to be given 3,000 feet separation with other aircraft in his airspace.

Data from flight-tracking websites shows both flights had highly erratic speed and altitude after takeoff, though confirmation is required from data recorded by the aircraft's "black box" flight recorders.

The JT610 plane that crashed off Jakarta was a Boeing 737 Max 8 jet, a new model that was launched globally previous year.

Anguished family members have been providing samples for DNA tests and police say results are expected within four to eight days.

The search for the black boxes has intensified in the vicinity of where the pings were heard, National Search and Rescue Agency Chief Marshal Muhammad Syaugi said.

But at a later news conference, another investigator, Ony Soeryo Wibowo, said they still haven't determined if it's the flight data or cockpit voice recorder.

One hundred divers were searching five areas off the coast of the island of Java, said Didi Hamzar, the national search-and-rescue agency's director of preparedness, after a large, unknown object was detected underwater by an Indonesian naval vessel.

Conchita Caroline, an Indonesian television presenter who was on that flight, said that at the beginning of the journey there were irregularities.

Indonesian authorities on Thursday said that the black box of the Lion Air Flight JT610 that crashed in the Java Sea on Monday, killing all 189 people on board, was retrieved by a diver.

The pilot of that flight after taking off from Denpasar, Bali island, on Sunday made a distress call, but after the plane started behaving normally, he chose to continue to Jakarta, the destination of the flight, landing there at 10.55 pm local time.

The government has vowed "strict sanctions" on Lion Air if a probe by the safety board proves negligence on the part of the airline, the ministry said on October 31.

The Lion Air crash is the worst airline disaster in Indonesia since 1997, when 234 people died on a Garuda flight near Medan.

"The pilots might have been busy identifying the problem of the plane, so they might not have been focused on monitoring its speed", he speculated. The video showing a boarding pass along with a shot of other passengers boarding the plane was taken by a passenger named Inchy Ayorbaba, who sent it to his wife via WhatsApp about 35 minutes before take-off.

While victims' relatives are desperate to know what happened, the investigation of the first crash of a Boeing Co 737 MAX, which only went into service in August, is also the focus of scrutiny by the global aviation industry. The ban was completely lifted in June this year.

Lion Air, Indonesia's biggest budget airline which has been engaged in huge expansion, announced earlier this year it was buying 50 Boeing-737 MAX 10 jets for $6.24 billion.
