Rashida Tlaib becomes first Muslim woman elected to Congress

Minnesota's Ilhan Omar joined "The View" on Wednesday to talk about her journey making history as the first Somali-American to win a seat in U.S. Congress.

"The first thing I think about when somebody says you're going to be the first Muslim is celebrate this moment", Tlaib told CBS News several days ago.

"I stand here before you tonight as your congresswoman-elect with many firsts behind my name", she said amid cheers.

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan's state legislature a decade ago. Somali-born Omar succeeds Representative Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to Congress, who ran for attorney general.

Also Massachusetts, Democrat Ayanna Pressley will be the first woman of colour in her state's congressional delegation.

Among those elected was Somali-American, Ilhan Omar, who easily won the election in Minnesota district. Tlaib won Michigan's 13th district.




Meanwhile, Michigan's heavily democratic Jewish community is figuring out ow to react to this wave of Muslim-American progressives who mostly share the same views on domestic policies but who could substantially differ when it comes to Israel.

The pair's election to the US House of Representatives comes amid widespread negative feeling against American-Muslims by their compatriots.

In 2008, she became the first Muslim woman to serve in the MI state legislature.

Regardless of who wins in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber. "What I defend is ideas", she said.

Omar, 36, fled her homeland of Somalia at the age of eight and lived in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating with family to the United States. -Palestinian relations under Republican President Donald Trump.

"That said, Tlaib's election is seen as a glimmer of hope in a very dark chapter in the Palestinian people's history", Barahmeh added.
