Defiant Cheika says slumping Australia will be back

Defiant Cheika says slumping Australia will be back

The incident happened at the squad's Cardiff hotel following the defeat to Wales at the Principality Stadium when the pair invited three women back to their room.

He confirmed Ashley-Cooper and Beale were left out of Australia's line-up for having uninvited guests in their hotel rooms earlier in the tour, breaching team policy.

"The leadership team came to me, they understood that the players did what they did and I thought we needed to take action", Cheika said. "Whether in this instance it was a family member or whatever it is, doesn't matter, that's the rule".

"While disappointed, I must say they're disappointed that they've put the team in this situation, but they accept the rules are in place to be lived by".

But Cheika hailed the decision to ditch Beale and Ashley-Cooper as proof of the his team's resolve, even though he played down their offences against the team code by saying they were comparable to "not being on curfew or late for training".

Jones said the core reason for Australia's struggles was not down to Cheika and claimed his former Randwick teammate was hamstrung by the system he was forced to work under. I don't think you can just point to Kurtley Beale as being potentially out of form.

They finish the calendar year as the sixth-ranked team in the world.

"And there's a bit of me that is relieved he came to that conclusion because he'd been copping it".

"They've done nothing to hurt anyone else".

"Maybe [we're] not flawless now, don't get me wrong, I'm not claiming to be the king of anything, we've got a long way to go".

Australia suffered nine defeats in 13 games this year, the worst record in the professional era.

According to a report in Australia's Daily Telegraph, both players were sanctioned after the leadership group consisting of Michael Hooper, David Pocock, Allan Alaalatoa, Samu Kerevi and Nick Phipps, chose to raise the issue.

"It's extremely hard. There's no way around it", Hooper said.

"There's no doubt one of his biggest strengths is loyalty, we need to make sure we've got the best team together, but we'll wait and see what the review process throws up".

The flanker added: "That's the direction we've got to go, these small steps to putting the team first are going to have a great outcome in the end".

As for the reception Australia would receive at Twickenham on Saturday, Cheika said: "We're going to cop a heap of grief -- probably a little bit more after today for sure -- but you've got to love it".
