Turkey Identifies 5 Suspects in Probe of Saudi Journalist’s Fate

On October 2, the International Day of Non-violence, journalist and a contributor to the Washington Post, Jamal Khashoggi entered Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, Turkey and he has not been seen since.

"We had direct and candid conversations", Pompeo said of his meetings with the Saudi King Salman, his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

Jamal Khashoggi had become increasingly critical of the powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in recent months.

Saudi Arabia agreed on the need for a "thorough" investigation into the Khashoggi's disappearance, a USA spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said following a meeting between Pompeo, who is the U.S. secretary of state, and Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir.

Pompeo said he would meet with President Tayyip Erdogan in the Turkish capital Ankara, two weeks after Khashoggi vanished when he visited the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to collect documents he needed for his planned marriage.

Reuters reports that Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has said Pompeo would bring information about Khashoggi's disappearance to Ankara.

"The investigation is looking into many things such as toxic materials and those materials being removed by painting them over", Erdogan told reporters.

"I think we have to find out what happened first", Trump told the Associated Press in an interview on Tuesday.

Graham said he will never return to Saudi Arabia until 33-year-old bin Salman, nicknamed MBS, is out of power.

However, Turkish sources say the journalist was killed inside the consulate - claims Riyadh slammed as baseless. "I spoke to the king yesterday, the crown prince, today wanting to know what was going on, what was happening, and he said very strongly that he and his father knew nothing about it".

How the crown prince, often referred to as MbS, emerges when the dust settles over Khashoggi's disappearance is a test of how the West will deal with Saudi Arabia in the future.

MbS, who has enjoyed a close relationship with the Trump administration, has painted himself as the face of a new, vibrant Saudi Arabia, diversifying its economy away from reliance on oil and making some social changes.

But the worldwide revulsion at the reported assassination and mutilation of a single newspaper columnist - Khashoggi, who wrote for The Washington Post - has already sullied that image far more than previous missteps by Mohammed bin Salman, from miring his country in a catastrophic war in Yemen to kidnapping the prime minister of Lebanon.

But there has been mounting criticism of some of the prince's moves.

The high-level Turkish official told the AP that police found "certain evidence" of Khashoggi's slaying at the consulate, without elaborating.

A Turkish official said on Tuesday the top Saudi diplomat's residence in Istanbul would also be searched.

Three other suspects are linked to Prince Mohammed's security detail and a fifth is a high-level forensic doctor, the Times said.

Pompeo was to have a dinner Tuesday night with Prince Mohammed and was expected to fly to Turkey on Wednesday.

Yet another suspect, Salah al-Tubaigy, works as the head of Saudi Arabia's Scientific Council of Forensics and specialises in mobile autopsies.

But it was delayed because no Saudi official was present for the joint investigation, the Turkish official added.
