Trump Praises Montana GOP Congressman for Body Slamming Reporter

President Donald Trump, to perhaps no one's surprise, is completely standing by his jovial comments about a Republican congressman's assault of a reporter. Trump called Gianforte "great guy" and "tough cookie".

Representative Greg Gianforte, who made brief remarks at the rally with Trump, was ordered to perform community service as part of his sentence for attacking Ben Jacobs, a correspondent for Britain's Guardian newspaper, on May 24, 2017, the day before a special election to fill Montana's sole congressional seat.

Trump said "Any guy that can do a body slam. he's my guy", at a rally in Montana.

The violent incident happened on the 24 May a year ago when the Guardian's political correspondent, Ben Jacobs, asked Gianforte a question about healthcare policy in the course of a special congressional election in Montana.

The reporter agreed not to sue Gianforte if he wrote a letter of apology and donated $50,000 to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

"Any guy that can do a body slam is my candidate. There is nothing to be embarrassed about", Trump said.

Mr Trump celebrated the episode as he introduced Montana Representative Greg Gianforte at a rally in Missoula, Montana, on Thursday evening (Oct 18).

While members of Congress are threatening to sanction the Saudi government, Mr Trump, who has cultivated closer ties to the kingdom, has taken a cautious stance, stressing the long alliance between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump said it "certainly looks" as though Khashoggi is dead, adding that if reports are true that the Saudis killed him, the consequences "will have to be very severe".

Knox added: "We should never shrug at the president cheerleading for a violent act targeting a free and independent news media".

So a politician attacks and assaults a journalist, and then more than a year later, Trump arrives in Montana and raves about it.

The Guardian US editor John Mulholland took aim at Trump's remarks. Jon Tester, but it was his praise for House Greg Gianforte's physical assault on a reporter that stole the show.
