Suspicious package headed to CNN’s Atlanta headquarters intercepted

Suspicious package headed to CNN’s Atlanta headquarters intercepted

There is no imminent danger to the CNN Center.

The first of last week's 14 bombs turned up on October 22 in the mailbox of billionaire Democratic donor George Soros' home in the suburb of Katonah, New York.

Among the other recipients were former President Barack Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former US Attorney General Eric Holder, California Senator Kamala Harris, New Jersey Senator Cory Booker and California Rep. Maxine Waters. A judge set another hearing for Friday on whether to grant bail to Sayoc and to discuss when he will be sent from Miami to NY, where five federal charges were filed.

Sayoc will be prosecuted in NY rather than Miami. Sayoc is accused of sending explosive material to Democrats and other prominent critics of President Donald Trump. The package appears identical to the other packages authorities say were sent by pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc, who was arrested on Friday.

Balsamo reported from Washington.

The FBI has confirmed that the package recovered at the Atlanta facility was addressed to CNN. But earlier in the day, CNN President Jeff Zucker announced that a suspicious package addressed to the cable television network was intercepted Monday at an Atlanta post office.

Spokesman Kevin Rowson said via email that the agency had been notified by the US Postal Inspection Service of a suspicious package that arrived at 400 Pryor Street in downtown Atlanta, which is the address of a post office. A judge set another hearing for Friday on whether to grant bail to Sayoc and to discuss when he will be sent from Miami to NY, where five federal charges were filed.

Investigators suspect he also sent the latest one and were conducting forensic tests to see if they could find a definitive link, another law enforcement official said.

"Though we are still analyzing the devices in our laboratories, these are not hoax devices", FBI Director Christopher Wray said in a press conference last Friday. Aaronson said he did not know what made Sayoc seem emotional but noted he is facing decades in prison if convicted.

According to CBS News, the package that was intercepted in Atlanta was similar to 14 others that were sent to high-profile newsmakers and CNN's NY bureau since October 23.
