Southgate excited by 'brave' Borussia Dortmund teen Sancho

Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Leicester City midfielder James Maddison and on-loan Derby County midfielder Mason Mount have been called up to the England senior side for the first time, and manager Gareth Southgate has signed a new deal until 2022.

There are six uncapped players in total in boss Gareth Southgate's 25-man squad, which has an average age of 23.9. He played past year on loan at Vitesse [Arnhem] and has had another season of men's football and created more chances than any other player in the league.

"He's a player that is explosive, is really creative in the final third, and has had a big impact in terms of assists in the matches he has played, can score goals and has had a big impact in our junior teams in the last couple of years".

"We've got a few injuries in the midfield in particular - Dele (Alli), Jesse (Lingard) and Ruben (Loftus-Cheek) have been missing - and Fabian Delph, so there is an opportunity there".

"Very often we hold youngsters back a bit too much", said Southgate, who previously coached England's under-21 team.

"Well, he's had a long period injured at Chelsea past year, so that wasn't a reflection on the quality of the player that he hadn't been with us, but he wasn't getting any football, really", Southgate said. We're always conscious of the balance in bringing young players in but we think they are performing well with their clubs and they are confident players. He has been courageous enough to go and play overseas and has started two Champions League games for Dortmund and has also had a big impact from the bench in their league games.

Maddison has created more goalscoring chances than any other English player in the Premier League this season.

Jordan Henderson has the most caps (46). Two of them have returned to the group after injury: Watford's Nathaniel Chalobah and Tottenham's Harry Winks.

Only nine have scored for England.

Southgate's new contract will run until after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and he told the FA's website he is looking forward to continuing leading the side. Experiencing at first-hand how the nation united behind the team this summer was something special and it will be great to see how far this young squad can go in the years to come.
