Senate votes to advance Brett Kavanaugh nomination to final vote Saturday

Senate votes to advance Brett Kavanaugh nomination to final vote Saturday

Jeff Flake (R-AZ), another key vote, voted yes on the motion to cloture. Sen.

The Senate on Friday voted to advance Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination, setting him up for an up-or-down vote that could come as early as Saturday afternoon.

Several Democrats conferred with Murkowski as well, including Minnesota Sen.

But logistically and politically, Maine Republican Susan Collins could be the most important vote in deciding whether Kavanaugh is eventually confirmed this weekend. 82 percent of Democrats say the same thing, slightly up from 78 percent in July.

Republicans said the secret document - which described interviews agents conducted with 10 witnesses - failed to find anyone who could corroborate allegations by his two chief accusers, Christine Blasey Ford and Deborah Ramirez. Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a social gathering during their high school years in the early 1980's.

The California Democrat said that the judge's behavior showed "a man filled with anger and aggression".

"I do not believe these charges should fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the Supreme Court."

." . Collins will not change, regardless of which way she votes on Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh could still win confirmation if Murkowski is the only Republican to oppose him. Steve Daines of Montana will not be in attendance if there is a Saturday vote because he will be walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding. If both Senators vote no, and assuming all other votes are along the same lines, then the Kavanaugh nomination will fall through.

"New information of a material nature regarding temperament during the September 27th hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee has prompted a re-opening of the Standing Committee's evaluation", a representative for the ABA's Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary said in a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen.

US Senate: Don't Approve Kavanaugh Nomination

Manchin said in a written statement, "My heart goes out to anyone who has experienced any type of sexual assault in their life".

With a 51-49 majority, Republicans can't afford more than one defection if all Democrats were to vote together. It offers a little insight into how wavering senators feel about advancing his nomination, though senators could potentially vote no for the final confirmation after voting yes in the procedural vote.

Still, Americans were kept guessing about the nominee's fate, as Alaska Republican Sen.

During Friday's roll call, Murkowski sat solemnly and whispered "No" when it was her turn to vote. She told reporters Friday that Kavanaugh is "a good man" but maybe "not the right man for the court at this time".

Two other women also made accusations of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh in the 1980s. Manchin, the only Democrat supporting Kavanaugh, faces a competitive re-election race next month in a state Trump carried in 2016 by 42 percentage points.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins of ME joined with almost all of her GOP colleagues and Democratic Sen.

Kavanaugh vehemently denied both allegations of sexual assault against Dr. Ford and of being a heavy drinker under oath in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee last week where he was visibly upset and later said in an op-ed piece in the Wall Street Journal that he "might have been too emotional".

The FBI doesn't appear to have examined allegations from Julie Swetnick, who said Kavanaugh took part in efforts at parties during high school to get girls intoxicated so that groups of boys could have sex with them. They said he also seemed ready to knock down President Barack Obama's health care law and to rule for Trump if federal authorities probing his 2016 campaign's connections to Russian Federation initiate legal action.
