President Uhuru congratulates Ethiopia's first woman President Zewde

The president's post is a ceremonial one in Ethiopia.

Under the Ethiopian constitution the president is given a maximum of a two terms of six years each.

The Ethiopian House of People's Representatives, the Ethiopian parliament's lower house, earlier approved the appointment of 16 new cabinet members upon the endorsement of Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, in which only four of the previous cabinet's members remained in their positions.

In her acceptance speech, President Sahle-Work spoke about the importance of maintaining peace.

"In a patriarchal society such as ours, the appointment of a female head of state not only sets the standard for the future but also normalizes women as decision-makers in public life".

Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome submitted a letter of resignation on Wednesday to the country's parliament, according to state media reports.

Before today's historic election, Sahle-Work Zewde served as the United Nations Under-Secretary General and Special Representative of the Secretary General to the African Union.

Abiy last week cut the country's ministerial roster to 20 and handed half the positions to women, including a female defense minister, another first for the nation.

They include defence minister Aisha Mohammed and Muferiat Kamil who leads the newly-created Ministry of Peace, responsible for police and domestic intelligence agencies.

Ethiopian lawmakers on Thursday will meet to appoint a new president, a largely ceremonial post in the Horn of Africa nation, the state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported. "Therefore, we need to work on peace for the sake of our mothers", Ms Sahle-Work told parliament after her approval.

Sahle-Work's appointment comes amid a Cabinet reshuffle and radical political reforms by Abiy, who took office in April and, at 41, is Africa's youngest leader.

Previously, she was the Director General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), a role that saw her hold meetings with His Excellency President Kenyatta on numerous occasions.
