Oman: We are not mediating Israel-Palestine peace process, but offering ideas

Oman: We are not mediating Israel-Palestine peace process, but offering ideas

Marking what was the first visit by an Israeli leader to the sultanate in over two decades, Netanyahu's office said in a statement on Friday that the visit came at the invitation of Sultan Qaboos and followed "lengthy contacts between the two countries".

He warned Muslim countries not to allow Tel Aviv to create "further trouble for the region". "The Palestinians are taking a strong position against the Trump administration and Netanyahu and yet they have to talk to the Israelis".

It formed part of "the policy outlined by Prime Minister Netanyahu on deepening relations with the states of the region", it said.

Netanyahu, along with a delegation, including Yossi Cohen, the director of the Mossad spy agency, and National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat, arrived in Muscat on Thursday night and flew back to the occupied Palestinian territories later on Friday, making it the first such meeting in over 20 years.

Iran on Saturday denounced a visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Oman, saying Israel was seeking to sow discord among Islamic countries.

The last Israeli leader to visit Oman was Shimon Peres in 1996.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also paid a three-day visit to Oman earlier this week.

In August, Benjamin Netanyahu dropped a hint that Israel may join an anti-Iranian Arab coalition in the event Tehran blocks the Bab al-Mandab Strait, the southern entrance to the Red Sea.

Unusually, the trip was prominently highlighted in Oman's state media.

A Wikileaks cable from 2010 reported that Gulf states believed they could "count on Israel against Iran".

Palestinians have been boycotting the Trump administration since it made a decision to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem earlier this year.

Netanyahu has repeatedly stated in recent years that Israel has developed good relations with several Arab states, despite a lack of official ties.

In February, Oman's foreign minister made a rare visit by an Arab official to Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound and to the West Bank.

In another sign of warming ties between Israel and Arab states, Israel's judo team is set for the first time to participate at an global competition in the UAE under their national flag.
