Melania Trump arrives in Malawi tomorrow

Melania Trump arrives in Malawi tomorrow

Melania Trump spent her second day in Ghana touring a former slave outpost and learning about some of the country's tragic past, as part of her first solo trip overseas as first lady.

The U.S. first lady spent about an hour on a guided tour of the 17th-century castle, where slaves were held before they were shipped across the Atlantic Ocean.

She described her visit to the Cape Coast Castle as "very emotional" and says the Castle is a place people should see and experience.

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama in 2009 on a visit to Ghana also visited the castle. Obama said it was a reminder of "the capacity of human beings to commit great evil". Mrs. Trump handed out teddy bears and blankets printed with her BE BEST message.

State House press officer Chikondi Juma told the local media that Trump's visit will focus on promoting education and health.

Melania, who has so far spent her time in Africa visiting children in schools and hospital patients, said the castle is 'really something that people should see and experience'.

"It's really, really touching", she said.

In June, she made a surprise visit to Texas to visit detained children at the Mexican border, wearing a jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care".

It's also her first visit to Africa.

After the talks, the US First Lady has been scheduled to visit the US Embassy in Nairobi wrapping up the only closed-door engagements on her visit.

After passing through the "door of no return", she placed a wreath nearby and stood solemnly while her guide sang.

Meanwhile, evangelist Franklin Graham praised the first lady for her willingness to reach out to those who are less fortunate.

"This is a very special place", said Trump, after spending nearly an hour taking a tour with the museum's director, Kwesi Essel-Blankson.

Ahead of her trip, Mrs Trump said that she was looking forward to seeing how the United States can continue working together with Malawi to support a USAid programme that is focussed on children's education. "With love, Melania Trump". A US official said the chief had invited two disabled children from a nearby school to the ceremony with the first lady, a break from local tradition in which it had previously been considered taboo to have anyone with handicaps in the palace.

In addition to Ghana, the first lady is due to visit Malawi, Kenya and Egypt before returning to Washington early on October 7.

"Issues to do with the welfare of children will take centre stage since the two first ladies have similar interests and passion for children", said Juma.
