Manchin applauds Republican senator's call for Kavanaugh FBI investigation

The FBI has started investigating Christine Blasey Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her when they were high schoolers.

On Friday, Republicans on the committee voted to proceed to a full Senate vote on Kavanaugh's nomination, but a series of back-room negotiations led to a surprise twist in what has already been a wrenching confirmation process for a Supreme Court nominee, among the most polarizing in recent memory. Senators Jeff Flake of Arizona, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of ME forced the hands of Republican leaders in seeking the delay, because Kavanaugh must have the support of at least two of them to win confirmation in a chamber Republicans govern, 51-49.

White House counsel Don McGhan, who is the administration's leading advocate for Kavanaugh's confirmation, is overseeing the probe for the President and working closely with Senate Republican leaders.

Swetnick has claimed, in a sworn statement, that Kavanaugh and Judge engaged in lewd behavior with young women at high school parties, and alleged the two placed drugs or alcohol in punch in order to inebriate women so they could be "gang raped" by other partygoers.

Chuck Grassley, the chairman of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement that he referred the matter to the U.S. Justice Department and the FBI to investigate the man's apparent false statements. Jeff Flake of Arizona made clear he would not vote to confirm Kavanaugh without one.

She said she's never forgotten Kavanaugh and Judge's "uproarious laughter. and their having fun at my expense".

She was followed by Judge Kavanaugh, who fiercely denied the allegations and lashed out at Democrats on the panel. As part of that investigation, the FBI has contacted a second Kavanaugh accuser.

The senator from Hawaii sat down for an interview with ABC News' George Stephanopolous to discuss the pending investigation into Judge Kavanaugh's allegations, calling it a "farce".

Kavanaugh, 53, denies all allegations against him.

"It's not meant to be a fishing expedition", White House adviser Kellyanne Conway said on CNN's "State of the Union".

The first is Mark Judge, a friend of Kavanaugh who according to Ford, was in the room during the alleged assault. The probe is limited to focus on the allegations made by Ford and Ramirez. So, for them, their goal has been to delay, destroy Kavanaugh's character, and use this to stir up the base in the hopes of winning the midterms. She said in her statement that there are two witnesses who can attest to her account, but she has not identified them publicly.

The letter marked a last-minute hitch in Judge Kavanaugh's nomination and came at the end of a tumultuous day in which Dr Blasey Ford, in an emotional appearance before the committee, accused Judge Kavanaugh of attacking her at a Maryland house party in 1982.

"The White House is not micromanaging this process", White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in an interview with Fox News Sunday.

NBC News, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal previously reported that the White House was constraining the investigation, prompting Senate Democrats on the Judiciary Committee to express concern. But Graham appeared to confirm that Swetnick would not be questioned by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In a letter addressed to both Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen.
