Khashoggi killed in interrogation 'gone wrong'

As of Monday morning, Mnuchin was still moving forward with plans to attend the Future Investment Initiative even as top bank executives and investors have withdrawn over the disappearance of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, according to a person familiar with the trip.

Trump said he had spoken with King Salman of Saudi Arabia, who denied any knowledge of Khashoggi.

Mr Trump said he did not "want to get" into King Salman's mind, but said: "It sounded to me like maybe these could have been rogue killers".

A pro-government Turkish daily published preliminary evidence last week from investigators it said identified a 15-member Saudi intelligence team which arrived in Istanbul on diplomatic passports hours before Khashoggi disappeared.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will travel to Riyadh today, the State Department said, adding that 'the president has called for a prompt and open investigation'.

But privately, others are now questioning whether the 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, the man once hailed as a visionary saviour of Saudi Arabia, has gone too far.

Trump said "nobody knows yet" what happened inside the consulate, "but we'll probably be able to find out" if Salman ordered Khashoggi's murder.

Trump has been under pressure to take action on the suspected murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi citizen who has been living and writing in the United States, including columns critical of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The president has previously said that he has ruled out sanctions or ending arms sales, arguing that it would have too harmful of an impact on the US economy. "The denial was very, very strong", Trump told reporters. President Trump has warned that Saudi Arabia would face "severe punishment" if it was found to have killed Khashoggi. Turkish officials have said they believe he was killed and dismembered inside the consulate.

He said Pakistan had a close and fraternal relationship with both Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Some suggested US arms sales to the regime should be halted if it's determined the journalist was killed inside the consulate. He said any response to Khashoggi's killing "needs to be strong, not symbolic", including the possibility of cutting off US weapons sales to Riyadh, or it would undermine the USA moral standing in the world.

The Saudi Arabian government is preparing to a release a report claiming Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed as a result of a botched interrogation, CNN reports.

Ryan supported the Khashoggi's family request for an independent, global investigation.

Turkish police officers enter the Saudi Arabia's Consulate in Istanbul.

The World Bank, The New York Times, Bloomberg, CNBC and Uber have also announced their decision to pull out the conference amid the ongoing scandal around Khashoggi's disappearance.
