Google+ Is Finally Shutting Down, And It’s About Time

Allegations of the improper use of data for 87 million Facebook users by Cambridge Analytica, which was hired by President Trump's 2016 USA election campaign, has hurt the shares of the world's biggest social network and prompted multiple investigations in the United States and Europe.

The bug was patched two weeks after it was initially discovered (Google took two weeks to analyze the data before patching the hole), but has now made a decision to shut down Google+ as a consumer service.

Google also announced that, in addition to shutting down Google+, it's revamping its account permissions to allow users to pick and choose which data they share with third-party apps.

"We are shutting down Google+ for consumers", Smith added, admitting that the product was, at best, underwhelming. "Given these challenges and the very low usage of the consumer version of Google+, we chose to sunset the consumer version of Google+", Google said in the blog announcement.

Google has been moving away from Google+ for a while, with the company launching new features for its core search engine where popular individuals, like celebrities, are able to directly post updates within search results.

The data exposed included full names, email addresses, birth dates, gender, profile pictures, places lived, occupations and relationship status.

The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations.

Applications for use on Android-powered smartphones that seek phone or SMS data will need to conform to stricter rules when it comes to calls or text messaging, Google said.

When applying for a new review, Gmail app developers will also have to agree to a new Google policy that prohibits them from selling data harvested via their app.

Almost 500,000 members of the Google+ social networking site had their user profile data left out in the open, easily accessible to third-party developers for over two years.

During the next 10 months, Google will provide consumers with "additional information" regarding ways they can download or migrate their data to other social media platforms if they so desire.

Instead of seeing all requested permissions in a single screen, apps will have to show you each requested permission, one at a time, within its own dialog box. Gmail add-ons access will also be limited.

The data breach does not include any other data a user may have posted or connected to Google+ or any other service. The company did not check up with any of the developers of the aforementioned 438 apps.

Finally, the Android contacts API will no longer let third-party apps access interactions with contacts.
