England vs Croatia: We should have won - Gareth Southgate

England's attempt to exact World Cup revenge on Croatia fell short in a 0-0 Nations League draw in front of an empty stadium in Rijeka on Friday as the visitors were left to rue Marcus Rashford's profligacy in front of goal.

Dier and Kane both headed against the woodwork - but it was a miserable night for Rashford, who was guilty of two glaring misses, one when he shot tamely at the keeper when he was unmarked and seemed certain to score.

However, a point does little for either side's hopes of usurping Spain, who beat both last month, to progress to the first ever Nations League semi-finals next summer.

England manager Gareth Southgate was disappointed with the outcome, saying: "Second half we were by far the better team and if we had taken our chances we would have won the game".

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live, said: "There would be more concern if we weren't creating chances".

"I've briefly had a bit of time with him when he was an under-15 in one of our camps, but also I've spent a lot of time talking to other youth coaches to get a good insight into his personality and how he is, just so we were able to help him settle as quickly as possible. We have to keep getting in those situations". He said: "As a player, you want to win every game, even a friendly".

With the ground so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the outburst was heard clear as day on Sky Sports' coverage. "That's just the game we are in".

"It will be a tough game, but these are the experiences you want to be in".

And six minutes after the break Kane rose highest to a Henderson free-kick only to see his looping header come back off the crossbar.

He scuffed a feeble shot at Dominik Livakovic from eight metres when clear on goal and the keeper then denied him again with a superb reflex save from an nearly identical position.

He attempted to enter the HNK Stadion in Rijeka dressed as a steward - orange bib and all - but failed to get into a match that was played behind closed doors to complete a two-game stadium ban imposed by UEFA following the daubing of a swastika symbol on the pitch in Split prior to a Euro 2016 qualifier vs. Italy in June 2015.

Southgate threw on 18-year-old Jadon Sancho for his global debut 12 minutes from time in search of a victor.

"Gareth gives more ownership to the players as a group", the 47-cap global told reporters.

"Football is played for the fans".
