After Debate, Trump Rips Beto O'Rourke, Endorses Former Rival Ted Cruz

Cruz has been a full-throated supporter of the president he battled during the presidential race two years ago, and hopes that the joint appearance will assuage some conservatives around the state who were angered by the past animosity. While the senator might wish everyone had forgotten all about that, his opponent Beto O'Rourke revived the nickname during Tuesday night's debate in San Antonio. Ted Cruz (R-TX), desperate Congressman Beto O'Rourke, who has seen Cruz open a significant lead over him in recent polls, tried to emulate President Trump circa 2016, calling Cruz "Lyin' Ted". Cruz called Trump a "sniveling coward" and refused to endorse him when he spoke at the Republican National Convention, prompting viewers to boo him off the stage.

"Sen. Cruz is not going to be honest with you".

O'Rourke also faulted Cruz for leading the 2013 federal government shutdown, for missing votes in Washington and for campaigning in Iowa to further his presidential ambitions rather than spending more time in Texas.

Cruz laughed off the exchange saying it was obvious that O'Rourke needed to attack to try and reverse polls that show him fading.

O'Rourke and Cruz clashed repeatedly on divisive issues such as abortion, immigration and the possible impeachment of President Donald Trump, and O'Rourke bitterly accused Cruz of being "dishonest" and misrepresenting his positions. Trump wrote. "Beto is a Flake!" "That's why the president called him Lyin' Ted and it's why the nickname stuck because it's true". O'Rourke set a Senate record for a single three-month period with $38 million in third-quarter donations, more than triple the haul for Cruz. "The tariffs that the president has levied, the trade wars that he has led us into, is hurting no state more than it's hurting Texas".

With Election Day just three weeks away, Tuesday night could be one of O'Rourke's last shots to gain ground - this is the race's last scheduled debate after one in Houston was canceled amid Senate floor votes on Kavanaugh's confirmation. Ted Cruz, the one-time presidential candidate whose Senate seat O'Rourke is aiming to capture next month. Cruz said people of both sexes need to be protected from harassment and abuse, adding "we need to protect everyone's rights".

As O'Rourke hammered Cruz as more interested in his political career than representing Texas - "Ted Cruz is for Ted Cruz", the challenger said at one point - Cruz pressed his long-running case that O'Rourke is captive to the activist left and too liberal for Texas. Trump carried the state by almost a million votes in 2016.

In response to a question about the #MeToo movement, O'Rourke said Cruz "inexplicably" voted against the Violence Against Women Act, saying the senator was "all talk and no action".
