Trump says he wants two-state solution for Israeli-Palestinian conflict

Trump says he wants two-state solution for Israeli-Palestinian conflict

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (Thursday NZ Time) accused China of interfering in the US midterm elections this fall in retaliation for the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing.

Mr Trump, speaking in front of world leaders while chairing the United Nations Security Council for the first time, did not present evidence for his claim, which came amid an ongoing special counsel investigation into Russia's attempts to interfere in the 2016 USA election and concerns that the November elections could also be vulnerable.

"He may not be a friend of mine anymore but I think he probably respects me", said the president, who said the United States economy was easily weathering the impact of the trade dispute.

Comments made by the president have fuelled speculation about the level of his commitment to a two-state solution, which past USA governments have advocated since the peace process began in the 1990s.

"We don't want them to meddle or interfere in our election".

At a news conference in NY later on Wednesday, Trump said he would be open to a one-state solution if that was the preference of the parties themselves, a position he has previously stated.

Asked later what evidence he had, Trump replied, "plenty of evidence", but did not provide any.

"The road to peace requires a two-state solution, a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital, and this is the Arab and global position", Rudeina said in a statement.

USA intelligence agency conclusions that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential vote have hung over Trump's presidency. Beijing has responded by targeting USA goods headed to China.

The Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi immediately rejected Trump's accusation, saying "We do not and will not interfere".

"They don't want me to get elected because this has never happened to them", Trump said, referring to the tariffs he has imposed on billions of dollars' worth of Chinese goods.

The statement was less than a definitive walkback from Trump's retreat soon after he assumed office from years of USA policy, which was committed to a Palestinian state as an outcome of a final status peace deal.

A Chinese official called the accusations "unwarranted", and insisted it did not and will not interfere "in any country's domestic affairs". On Sept. 18, Trump issued two tweets complaining that China's tariffs are targeting "our farmers, ranchers and industrial workers due to their loyalty to me".

"We're going to take care of Venezuela, if he's here and he wants to meet, it was not on my mind, it was not on my plate, but if I can help people that's what I'm here for". The Palestinians called on Trump to reassert U.S. support for their own state. The president then used a U.N. Security Council meeting to make allegations against Beijing over election meddling.

Trump, who was at a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, gestured to Netanyahu, saying, "Now, you may have a different feeling, I don't think so". "They are absolutely coming back to the table", he said.

Observers have suggested that these measures are tactics by the United States to force Palestinians to accept a Trump-touted peace deal, which will be hugely favourable to Israel.

"There were too many false realities that were created - that people worship - that I think needed to be changed", Kushner said on the anniversary of the signing of the Oslo Accords.
