Tropical Storm Gordon lashes south Florida and heads toward Gulf Coast

Gordon is already lashing south Florida with rain and tropical-storm-force winds.

As the storm crossed Florida's southern tip on Monday morning, officials closed the beaches in Miami-Dade County and warned of possible street flooding.

Tropical Storm Warnings have been posted for parts of south Florida and much of the Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana coastlines ahead of Gordon.

Pressure was 1009 mb and movement was west-northwest at 16 miles per hour.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Florence continued to gain strength over the eastern Atlantic on Monday, about 980 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Tropical Storm Gordon, now off the coast of South Florida, will move northwest over the next three days.

Gordon was expected to strengthen in the Gulf.

The local forecast shows the potential for a peak storm surge of 2 to 4 feet above ground in surge-prone areas through early Thursday afternoon.

"It looks like for the next three or four days we're going to be having to really watch close", Graham said, "and remember if you're even inland you can get some of these heavy rainfall totals so now is the time to be prepared".

Tropical Storm Gordon has left many businesses on Florida's Gulf Coast feeling shortchanged by the holiday weekend. According to a report by CNN, 13 million people are under a tropical storm warning as of Monday afternoon, and nearly 2 million people are under hurricane watches and storm surge warnings. Cantrell said the city expects to see impact of the storm beginning late Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday. It's expected to be a hurricane when it makes landfall along the central Gulf Coast by Tuesday night. After moving northwest, the next landfall for Gordon will likely be somewhere in southeastern Louisiana or southern Mississippi.

Weather forecasters have issued storm warnings for portions of South Florida and the Florida Keys.

The storm began as a tropical wave over the Caribbean last week.

The center said in its 8:30 a.m. EDT advisory that the storm was centered 20 miles (30 kilometers) west of Key Largo and 85 miles (135 kilometers) southeast of Marco Island.
