‘Storm of lifetime’: Hurricane Florence barrels toward Carolinas as residents flee

"There's very high confidence that Florence will reach the southern coast of North Carolina on Thursday night as a very risky major hurricane", meteorologist Bob Henson wrote on the website weatherunderground.com on Tuesday night.

This Nasa handout photo shows a view from the International Space Station of Hurricane Florence off the U.S. east coast in the Atantic Ocean on 10 September 2018.

National Hurricane Center now says tropical storm force winds "reasonable" for north Florida.

But despite the potentially devastating hurricane, forecast to make landfall on Friday with 130mph winds, people tried to offer some "relief" in the silence before the storm.

Forecasters said parts of North Carolina could get 20 inches (50 centimeters) of rain, if not more, with as much as 10 inches (25 centimeters) elsewhere in the state and in Virginia, parts of Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Several prominent beaches along North Carolina's southern coast closest to where Florence was expected to pass as of Wednesday morning were under the mandatory evacuation order. It will be more tropical depression at that point.

In a press conference on Monday, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said predations were made to accommodate 1 million people leaving the coast, a report by The State said.

"The time to prepare is nearly over", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a morning news conference.

It was a potentially catastrophic Category 4 storm but was expected to keep drawing energy from the warm water and intensify to near Category 5, which means winds of 157 miles per hour (253 kph) or higher. More than 1 million residents have been ordered to evacuate from the coastline of the three states, while university campuses, schools and factories were being shuttered.

Another commenter said: 'That hurricane better be taking me to dinner first'. Current forecasts call for Florence to be at least a Category 3 storm when it arrives at the Carolinas.

More tips on hurricane preparation can be found at the National Weather Service's website. "Don't panic, people just need to prepare, just in case".

Officials in New Hanover County, which includes Wilmington, have stockpiled enough food and water for 60,000 people for four days, along with more than 28,000 tarps.

Following a statewide emergency declaration, Athens area hospitals and emergency service agencies on Wednesday prepared for what could be the most catastrophic hurricane to hit the mid-Atlantic coast in decades.

Tim Terman said family members have been pressuring him and his wife to evacuate their home in Bald Head Island, North Carolina, but they are staying put - for now.

"The biggest thing is you're always anxious about yourself and friends and family - and whether they'll have a place to come back to", he said. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland.

"We're just trying to plan for the future here, not having a house for an extended period of time", David Garrigus said.
