San Antonians react to first debate between Cruz, O'Rourke

San Antonians react to first debate between Cruz, O'Rourke

These wildly different numbers speak to the difficulty of gauging who will go to the polls in Texas - the state has among the worst voter turnout rate in the nation, and it remains to be seen how much Democratic enthusiasm for O'Rourke will shift those numbers.

A big part of his fanbase really does seem to be upset about his decision, declaring themselves to no longer be fans, or swearing off his music entirely. "I'm sorry you don't like thoughts and prayers", Cruz said. "I think vast majority of Texans agree on that", Cruz said.

Colbert capped off the interview by showing Willie a series of pictures featuring notable people and asked which he would like light up with. A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll gave O'Rourke a slight edge, with 47 percent to Cruz's 45 percent, but that came on the heels of a Quinnipiac University survey that showed Cruz up by nine percentage points.

"I did not try to leave the scene of the accident", O'Rourke responded.

Cruz went on the attack moments after stepping on the stage, saying his opponent suggested that law enforcement officers embodied "modern-day Jim Crow" laws in response to a question about Guyger.

The crowd watching the debate at Southern Methodist University Friday was most animated while Cruz and O'Rourke took on guns, police violence and mass shootings. But O'Rourke said the senator "has a tendency to mischaracterize a position".

A truck sporting a billboard plastered with a negative tweet from Trump about Cruz during the presidential campaign was parked outside the debate hall hours before the two men were set to face off.

After a concise summary of the importance of the Supreme Court's Heller decision which reaffirmed an individual right to bear arms, Mr. Cruz ended his remarks declaring Mr. O'Rourke is about "writing the Second Amendment out of the Bill of Rights".

Texas Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke has denounced this incident as an example of racial injustice in policing, of which there is overwhelming evidence exists on a wide scale. He also said that O'Rourke was more to the left on policy than Sen. "But I'll tell you something, I've been to too many police funerals".

Alternating yard signs for Cruz and O'Rourke line the front lawns in the neighborhood, which is not unlike other areas of the country where Republicans find themselves on defense in 2018, facing voters that have traditionally voted Republican but may be disillusioned with the first years of the Donald Trump presidency. "As a matter of fact, I have very much the same sentiments- You know, previous year I did three debates with Bernie Sanders and I expressed this at all three debates that Bernie Sanders believes in what he's fighting for".

Gun rights were discussed and the mass shooting at Santa Fe High School was brought up. "I will pray for anyone in harm's way, but I'll also do something about".

"True to form", O'Rourke reacted.

There are two other debates - September 30 at the University of Houston and October 16 in San Antonio. Early voting begins October 22.
