South Africa's murder rate rose again past year, official statistics showed on Tuesday, with over 20,000 people killed across the country - about 57 a day - as police admitted they were struggling to keep control.

"More research is needed into why there was a slight reported decrease in other violent crimes such as assault (down 1.9%) or armed robbery (down 1.8%), as these are the crimes that often lead to murder", he said.

"About 10,000 police officers which means we do have a problem".

In 2017/2018, Sekhukhune said there were 33 incidents of robbery, six incidents of attempted murder, two incidents of rape, two incidents of stock-theft and one incident of robbery with a firearm, carjacking and kidnapping on farms and small holdings.

Carjackings, house robberies and business robberies, which had all increased during the last financial year had only slightly decreased by 2.3 per cent, 0.4 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively in SA.

Murders of women spiked by 11% with 2930 murders reported in 2017-2018 compared with 2639 in the previous period.
