Novak Djokovic comforts tearful Juan Martin Del Potro in touching moment

Novak Djokovic comforts tearful Juan Martin Del Potro in touching moment

Aged just 20, Del Potro defeated Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in successive matches to win the 2009 US Open, and the world No 3 was determined to stay competitive, staying firm following a gritty hold in the opening game of the next set.

After a slow start with both in control of their own serves, disaster struck for Del Potro.

The sixth seed had suffered in the ferocious heat and humidity through the early days of the season's final Grand Slam but dropped only two sets for the tournament and none since the second round.

While Djokovic's athleticism graced the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Del Potro was buoyed by the "Delpo, Delpo" chants of his friends who have reverberated the stadium throughout the tournament.

Thereafter, there were two service holds and the set was poised at 3-2 and suddenly, Flushing Meadows saw a massive momentum shift.

"I was hoping he was going to be here, but he's not, " Djokovic said about Sampras.

In the middle of that there was some world class tennis on display.

It was Djokovic's 15th win over the Argentine and fifth in five at the Slams. Twice, the Serb tried to attack at the net. It came as Djokovic smashed a championship-winning forehand.

Djokovic had lost five previous finals at Flushing Meadows, but he was determined to make amends for his lack of trophies in NY as his defensive ability combined with his ruthless prowess saw him break in the fourth game, although Del Potro was not in the mood to give up so easily as he hit straight back.

In the tiebreak, Del Potro looked susceptible to forehand errors and Djokovic showed huge courage and quality to take it away from Del Potro, going up 2-0 in the final. He had the upper hand in the second set tie-breaker but couldn't convert, and after fighting back from a break down in the third set he served up a double fault to give Djokovic a chance for the final break of serve. What was different was that the quality of tennis only kept getting better.

"We are proud to be close to these legends", Del Potro said.

Djokovic was better than del Potro on their many lengthy exchanges, using his trademark body-twisting, limb-splaying court coverage to get to almost every ball, sneakers squeaking around the blue court in Arthur Ashe Stadium, where the roof was closed because of rain.

He broke Djokovic back with some brilliant movement on the court, leaving Djokovic stranded to take the third set back on serve.

Without much trouble, Djokovic held his own and took the Championship in NY for a third time.
