More cases of Australians finding sewing needles in their strawberries

The Department of Health is advising Australians to cut the fruit prior to eating.

"She bit into one of the strawberries and discovered a needle which she told her mum about", SA Police Detective Inspector Billy Thompson said.

"Coles has complied with Queensland Health's request to remove Donnybrook strawberries from sale following reports of product contamination", its spokesman said.

The crisis could prove devastating for the strawberry industry as growers enter peak season.

Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt ordered the national food safety watchdog to investigate Queensland's handling of the needle scare.

"Someone is trying to sabotage the industry but also in doing that, they are putting babies' and children's and families' lives at risk", said Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.

Anton said he and his 19-year-old sister called the police immediately, who came and seized the punnet of fruit and needle.

"They have behaved shockingly badly and they are affecting the strawberry industry in Australia but also now the exports to New Zealand".

Strawberries are grown year-round in Australia, with about one third of the country's roughly 620 growers located in Queensland, one third in Victoria, 22 per cent in Western Australia and a small number in Tasmania and NSW.

It comes as New Zealand food distributors removed Australian strawberries from their shelves as a precaution, further adding to the devastation caused by the unidentified culprit.

A Queensland strawberry farmer will install metal detectors to check his produce as the industry deals with the fallout from the discovery of sewing needles in punnets of the fruit.

On Friday, Australian police said in a statement that six brands could now be affected, though government officials on Saturday told reporters that only three brands have been recalled.

Six brands of strawberries are now believed to be affected by needle and pin contamination, according to New South Wales police.

EARLIER: QUEENSLAND Police are investigating an incident where a "metal object" was found inside a banana.

Consumers have been urged to cut up their strawberries before eating.

They have yet to reveal possible motives but the Queensland Strawberry Growers Association said a disgruntled former worker might be responsible.

He said other growers were being forced to do the same, with others cutting back on staff in the wake of the nationwide strawberry contamination.
