Kavanaugh accuser to testify before Senate on Thursday

In this September 5, 2018, file photo, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, testifies before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Capitol Hill in Washington, for the second day of his confirmation hearing to replace retired Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Christine Blasey Ford to testify about her sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge, has denied the allegations and said he would be willing to testify.

Expressing his frustration over the tactics of Ford and her legal team, Grassley wrote late on Friday on Twitter, "Five times now we have granted extension for Dr. Ford to decide if she wants to proceed with her desire stated one week ago that she wants to tell Senate her story".

Earlier, the panel had given the California professor until 2:30 pm (1830 GMT) to decide whether to appear, after she rejected a Friday evening deadline imposed by the committee's Republican leader, Chuck Grassley.

Earlier on Saturday, Ford had indicated she'd accept the Senate Judiciary Committee's request to discuss an alleged sexual assault by Kavanaugh, although the terms under which she might testify remained largely unclear.

Attorneys Debra Katz and Lisa Banks said many aspects of Grassley's latest offer were "fundamentally inconsistent" with the committee's promise of a "fair, impartial investigation". I want to hear her.

'There have been a lot of things said about the alcohol that was consumed by the judge as well as by others in his school.

Confirming Kavanaugh's nomination would cement conservative control of the Supreme Court and advance a White House effort to tilt the American judiciary farther to the right.

But she will also face great scepticism, not least from some of the Republican members of the judiciary committee who will question her on Thursday.

Katz had said the deadline was "aggressive and artificial".

A Democratic senator on the Judiciary Committee, Mazie Hirono, said she wanted to hear from Kavanaugh about the drinking and partying environment in high school.

The person says that lawyers for Christine Blasey Ford and bipartisan representatives of the committee came to the tentative agreement Saturday. And just seven weeks from an election in which Democrats are hoping to capture control of the House and maybe the Senate, her emergence has also drawn intensified attention to the #MeToo movement's focus on sexual abuse. Republican committee staff and Ford's lawyers had reached a stalemate in negotiations over the details of the testimony. Well, someone told Whelan what was up, and any coordination with Kavanaugh (for example, via the right-wing PR outfit CRC, who hyped Whelan's revelation), would be separate grounds for denying him confirmation and would also ensnare the judge in the host of civil and ethical problems Whelan created.

A senior official at the White House said the letter amounted to "an ask to continue "negotiations" without committing to anything".

As the back-and-forth continued late Friday and into Saturday, Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee began to grow tired of the extended talks.

There are unresolved procedural and logistical issues, they said, including whether the committee's Republican senators, who are all male, or staff attorneys would question her.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, speaking at a gathering of evangelical voters in Washington, assured them Kavanaugh would be confirmed. But she should come forward, she should have her say, she will be respectfully treated.
