Jon Kyl named as John McCain's successor - KVOA | KVOA.com | Tucson, Arizona

Jon Kyl (R-AZ) to fill the late Sen. I am deeply grateful to Senator Kyl for agreeing to succeed his friend and colleague of so many years. Ducey, a Republican, is required by Arizona law to name a Republican to replace the Republican McCain.

McCain's widow, Cindy McCain, confirmed the choice Tuesday ahead of the announcement, The Associated Press reported. Some Arizonans also said they would have liked to see McCain's wife Cindy named to fill his seat. He is a lawyer, who has been acting in recent weeks as the top liaison to the Senate on behalf of President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Doug Ducey (R.) announced Tuesday that former Arizona Sen.

Kyl, 76, retired from the Senate in 2013, previously serving as Senate minority whip. McConnell and his allies wanted to have someone replace McCain who would instantly go into campaign move for 2020 and again in 2022, when that person would run for a fresh, six-year full term in the Senate.

"With almost two decades of experience in the Senate serving along side John McCain, Senator Kyl is prepared to hit the ground running", Ducey said. John McCain and giving the GOP timely reinforcements.

Today, Senate Majority Leader Mitch welcomed Kyl back to the U.S. Senate.

Voters will decide who they want in the seat in 2020, when they elect someone to serve the rest of McCain's term.

Ducey announced that Kyl would serve through at least the end of the year.

Kyl was appointed by Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey but agreed only to a brief appointment through January 2019.

Mr. Kyl, who had risen to be the second-ranking Republican in the Senate before retiring in 2012, served alongside McCain for 18 years.

Mr. Kyl said he will not be a candidate for the seat in 2020.

It was the sometimes more moderate McCain who previous year thwarted fellow Republicans' attempts to undo Obamacare in a dramatic vote shortly after being diagnosed with cancer in July 2017.

Kyl's entire career in Washington overlapped with McCain's, and he served with the state's senior senator for three terms before stepping down. However, he had said anyone who lobbied for the appointment before the senator's death would be disqualified.

The Republican Ducey says he hopes that Kyl will serve longer. But he is likely to be a reliable Republican vote in the final months of Congress which, along with the Kavanaugh nomination, could bring myriad spending issues, and the possibility of a government shutdown.

Kyl will be entering a narrowly divided senate where Republicans could gain or lose seats in November.
