Japanese Billionaire Will Be the First Private Passenger of SpaceX's Falcon Rocket

SpaceX said Monday night that it would send Yusaku Maezawa, a billionaire entrepreneur and online fashion tycoon from Japan, on a trip around the moon in 2023 aboard the company's monster Big Falcon Rocket. He plans to tie the journey to his hobby of art collection, and states that he plans to bring six to eight artists of varying disciplines along with him as part of a project called #dearMoon, a collaborative art project meant to inspire humanity for generations to come.

The average distance from Earth to the moon is about 237,685 miles (382,500 kilometres ).

After joining SpaceX on stage, Maezawa said that he can finally announce that he has chosen to go to the moon. "I love art and I look forward to seeing what different artists working together [can] bring to life", Maezawa said during the announcement. Of course, the goal of this would be that once the artists would come back from the Moon, they will be able to come up with great artwork.

Being an artist himself, Maezawa wants to invite other artists to join him on his trip.

"All right. Maybe we will both be on it", Musk said to cheers and applause. "And late Sunday, Musk further fueled the anticipation by tweeting out artist renderings of the massive launch vehicle that SpaceX is developing to fly into deep space, with a simple message: "#OccupyMars".

Interestingly, we're about to enter a roughly 10-month period that will mark the 50-year anniversary of not just the lunar landing, but a series of five Apollo launches in quick succession that led to the most famous, Apollo 13.

The Moon is about 385,000 km away from Earth and the last time an astronaut traveled there was in 1972 as part of the Apollo 17 mission.

He appeared at an event Monday at SpaceX headquarters near Los Angeles. The space agency aims to build a gateway in the vicinity of the moon, complete with staff, during the 2020s. The outpost would serve as a stepping-off point for the lunar surface, Mars and points beyond. In 2012, he started the Tokyo-based Contemporary Art Foundation to support young artists.

In 2016 he sold $250 million worth of stock so he could buy more art.

According to the New York Times, Maezawa "may be best known" for his $110 million (£83 million) purchase of a 1982 Jean-Michel Basquiat painting of a skull, a sum that his sister Lisane Basquiat referred to as leaving the family "speechless". Musk has previously expressed a desire to fly in space, though not on the earliest, riskiest missions. With enough thrust to carry almost a hundred people all the way to Mars, it's safe to say it won't be much of a problem to carry six-eight artists including crew to the moon and back. Yusaku, however, declined to reveal the figures that he paid for the flight, but the trip will be free-of-cost for the artists that go with him.

The era of space tourism began in 2001, when California businessman Dennis Tito paid for a journey on a Russian rocket to the International Space Station.

Short sightseeing trips to space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket are likely to cost around $200,000 to $300,000, at least to start, Reuters reported in July.
