Hurricane warning issued as Tropical Storm Gordon hits Gulf

Hurricane warning issued as Tropical Storm Gordon hits Gulf

Gordon, the seventh named storm of the season, was expected to form once it reached the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, but spun up a little before the forecast predicted.

Gordon lashed South Florida with heavy rains and high winds Monday.

A tropical storm watch has been issued for portions of the central Gulf Coast from the Alabama-Florida line westward to almost Morgan City, Louisiana.

The storm was moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 kph). Many replies to various National Weather Service accounts or other outlets with their pleas that the storm veer spontaneously away, as the Gulf coast is still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Some gradual strengthening is expected, and it's forecast Gordon will be a low-end, Category 1 hurricane at landfall late tonight or early Wednesday.

Tropical-force winds from fast-moving Gordon smashed into the coastline of Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle on Tuesday evening, the frontal edge of a system just offshore that forecasters warned could become a hurricane by the time it makes landfall.

In New Orleans, a voluntary evacuation order is in effect for people who live in neighborhoods that are not protected by levees.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency, saying 200 Louisiana National Guardsmen were being deployed, along with 63 high-water trucks, 39 boats, and 4 helicopters.

There was a storm surge warning in effect for Shell Beach to Dauphin Island, and a storm surge watch west of Shell Beach to the mouth of the Mississippi River and east of Dauphin Island to Navarre. Gordon is expected to produce rain accumulations of 4 to 6 inches over southern Alabama, southern MS and Louisiana, with some isolated areas receiving up to 8 inches, through early Thursday. We got out of it barely alive."Jeff Collier, mayor of Dauphin Island, Alabama, in the Gulf, said the storm was approaching just as the island was finishing up recovery from Hurricane Nate previous year."We've just about got things cleaned up", Collier told WPMI.

The storm left many businesses on Florida's Gulf Coast feeling shortchanged by the holiday weekend. The area has already been heavily impacted by this summer's so-called "red tide"- massive algae blooms that have caused waves of dead marine life to wash up along the coast.

Geo Rodriguez chose to go for a walk on Hollywood Beach, north of Miami, on Monday morning and got caught in the storm. Hurricane Florence was some 2,400 miles (3,900 kilometres) away from the USA, and another potential storm was likely to form not far off the coast of Africa and head east. It is about 1,205 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and about 1,300 miles east-northeast of the Lesser Antilles.
