Hurricane Florence: What To Know - Will It Hit Your State & When?

Hurricane Florence: What To Know - Will It Hit Your State & When?

Forecasters said rapid intensification is likely to begin by tonight and Florence is expected to become a major hurricane by Monday.

The center of the hurricane is forecast to move across the Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas tomorrow and Wednesday (Sept. 11-12), before approaching the southeastern coast of the US on Thursday.

The massive hurricane poses a serious threat as it barrels toward a landfall somewhere along the East Coast on Thursday. Such swells can lead to risky surf and rip currents, the NHC warned.

"The bottom line is that there is increasing confidence that Florence will be a large and extremely risky hurricane, regardless of its exact intensity", Blake said.

The Meteorological Service of Jamaica said at 4:00 am Sunday, Tropical Storm Isaac was centred about 2,475 kilometers east of the Windward Islands. "Storm Surge and Hurricane watches could be issued for portions of these areas by Tuesday (Sept. 11) morning", said the NHC in the update.

The states of North and SC and Virginia - all potentially in Florence's crosshairs - have already issued emergency declarations to help speed preparations.

Florence continued its west-northwest crawl toward the southeastern US coast, packing maximum sustained winds of 90 miles per hour.

"Everyone in North Carolina needs to keep a close eye on Florence and take steps now to get ready for impacts later this week", Cooper said.

While the cone of uncertainty still covers most of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, prediction models of the storm indicate it's headed toward some area between Charleston, S.C. and North Carolina's Outer Banks. "If slows after landfall may cause heavier rain & winds".

CNN's forecasters warn that Florence could be the strongest and most devastating hurricane to hit North and SC in about three decades.

Camp Lejeune says in a statement that it's urging personnel to prepare now, and will open shelters on the base if necessary.

"This morning, I received a full briefing from the Florida Division of Emergency Management on Hurricane Florence". A "Hurricane Hunter" aircraft recorded maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour. SC has been hit by three Category 4 storms: Hazel; Gracie, in 1959; and Hugo, in 1989.

Over the next 36 hours, Florence's winds could reach 150 mph, the hurricane center says.

"The Storms in the Atlantic are very risky", President Donald Trump tweeted.

Hurricane Florence will make its way westward, likely toward the Carolinas later this week while Hurricane Isaac moves westward toward the Caribbean.
