George Papadopoulos: Ex-Trump advisor jailed in Russia inquiry

George Papadopoulos: Ex-Trump advisor jailed in Russia inquiry

If Papadopoulos had not in fact communicated to the campaign that Russia had ill-gotten information on Clinton, that would be extraordinarily ironic, given that one of the main events that first led the FBI to open an investigation into the Trump campaign was allegedly that Papadopoulos boasted over drinks about Russian dirt on Clinton to an Australian diplomat.

His case was the first to detail a member of the Trump campaign having knowledge of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election while it was ongoing.

"I made a terrible mistake, but I am a good man who is eager for redemption", Papadopoulos said at his sentencing.

Among those contacts were London-based professor Joseph Mifsud, who told him the Russians had "dirt" on Mr. Trump's Democratic presidential rival, Hillary Clinton, in the form of "thousands of e-mails".

Papadopoulos apparently raised the possibility of setting up a meeting between Trump and Putin during a national security meeting in March 2016.

In a court filing, lawyers for Papadopoulos had argued for probation, saying he was "ashamed and remorseful" but wasn't trying to undermine the Russian Federation probe when he was "caught off-guard by an impromptu interrogation".

Lawyers for Mr. Papadopoulos dispute some of the government's characterizations, and they asked the judge to sentence him to probation.

Ultimately, Moss said he felt Papadopoulos expressed genuine remorse.

Papadopoulos was pictured in March 2016 sitting at a table with Trump, then-campaign adviser Jeff Sessions who went on to become USA attorney general, and other foreign policy campaign advisers.

Memos authored by House Republicans and Democrats, now declassified, show that information about Papadopoulos' contacts with Russian intermediaries triggered the FBI's counterintelligence investigation in July 2016 into potential coordination between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Prosecutors did not recommend a sentence for Papadopoulos, but said up to six months' jail time was appropriate saying he had lied repeatedly to federal investigators and had not provided substantial cooperation to them.

"The defendant's lies undermined investigators' ability to challenge the Professor or potentially detain or arrest him while he was still in the United States", they wrote, noting that Mifsud left the U.S. in February 2017 and hasn't returned.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents interviewed Papadopoulos in January 2017, and he lied about his April 2016 conversation with Joseph Mifsud, a Maltese professor working in London who had ties to Russian officials.

For a time, Papadopoulos also looked to be a key informant.

That account conflicts with what Sessions, now attorney general, testified before Congress.

Papadopoulos was also sentenced to 13 months supervised released, 200 hours community service and a $9,500 fine.
