Foles shows off catching skills, Eagles beat Falcons 18-12

The Philadelphia Eagles went to a familiar trick play to bring life to their offense in Thursday's season opening win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Julio Jones is arguably the most dominant wide receiver in football, but the Falcons have had trouble getting him into the end zone over the past two or so years.

The offense took a while to get going after a shaky preseason in which most starters didn't play much. "They did really good in their man-coverage tonight", quarterback Nick Foles said. The Falcons led 6-3 at the half on a pair of Matt Bryant field goals. "Jones is one of the best but we got the stop". He finished the night with 19/34 for 117 yards, no touchdowns and one interception for a passer rating of 50.7. We also fold in opponent-adjusted PFF grades into our machine-learning algorithm to factor in roster changes and possible asymmetric mismatches that can occur through the course of a game.

A sloppy, mistake-filled game that featured 26 penalties came down to Ryan throwing an incomplete pass to Jones in the left corner of the end zone on the final play from Philadelphia's 5.

The Falcons were able to move the ball well in between the sticks but once they reached the red zone, it seemed as though nothing would work. Sarkisian was heavily criticized past year for not having Jones, a two-time All-Pro, dialed in more often as Ryan's No. 1 option inside the opponents' 20. Second-year offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian spent plenty of time in the offseason trying to improve the team's scoring efficiency. He stayed in the tunnel for the last three weeks. They were doing it all night (Jones was targeted 19 times and had 10 catches for 169 yards).

The mostly lacklustre affair ended with a defensive stand by Philadelphia as the Falcons had a chance to win the game on the last play.
