Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing to have tie-ins to Trump

Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court confirmation hearing to have tie-ins to Trump

He said the records were provided to the Department of Justice for "an independent assessment of its proper categorization and treatment", after which the White House directed the documents not be provided to the committee. Where does Kavanaugh stand on some key issues?

William Burck, a lawyer charged by former President George W. Bush with reviewing the documents housed in the presidential library, disclosed the exemptions in a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley on Friday. If Kavanaugh is confirmed, his conservative stances could potentially affect the U.S. Supreme Court for years.

The judge was deeply skeptical of Congress' ability to impose restrictions, calling limits on outside groups "blatantly unconstitutional" - a position the Supreme Court eventually took as well when it struck down the restrictions.

The constitutional limits of executive power - including whether presidents must comply with federal subpoenas or if they can be called to testify or be indicted - have yet to be settled by the high court, making Kavanaugh's views on the matter a point of keen interest for Democrats. "We're going to have a hearing and there's no drama in this hearing", he said.

Trump is under investigation by the special counsel, Robert Mueller, regarding Russian election interference, links between Trump aides and Moscow and potential obstruction of justice.

"If Brett Kavanaugh is appointed to the Supreme Court, he will undoubtedly be the deciding vote to gut Roe v. Wade and criminalize abortion, bringing us back to a dark chapter in this country's history that forced women into unsafe, illegal abortion", said Karin Roland, Chief Campaigns Officer of UltraViolet.

Because of the razor-thin margin in the Senate, the focus is on the 10 Democrats running for re-election in 2018 in states that Trump won just two years ago.

With his decades of work as a Washington power player - as a Bush lawyer, White House Staff Secretary, and then Appeals Court judge - Kavanaugh sports an extensive paper trail, a history Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell anxious about before President Trump nominated him.

Republicans have dismissed Democrats' concerns over lack of access to portions of the record on Kavanaugh's background, arguing their criticism is politically motivated. In addition, Trump officials say they will not release 101,921 pages of Kavanaugh-related records to the panel because of the sensitivity of the communications.
